{"id":176470,"date":"2025-08-26T07:50:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T07:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/176470\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T07:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T07:50:15","slug":"duval-and-glynn-counties-see-increase-in-mosquito-borne-west-nile-virus-104-5-wokv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/176470\/","title":{"rendered":"Duval and Glynn Counties see increase in mosquito-borne West Nile virus \u2013 104.5 WOKV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Health officials across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are urging residents to take precautions after mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">In Duval County, the Florida Department of Health reported an increase in mosquito-borne disease activity after several sentinel chickens tested positive for West Nile virus. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">The department is working with Jacksonville Mosquito Control to coordinate surveillance and prevention efforts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Meanwhile, in Glynn County, Georgia, Vector Disease Control International (VDCI), the county\u2019s mosquito control contractor, notified officials of positive mosquito pool test results at five locations in the Brunswick area, including Blythe Island Regional Park, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the GP Paper Mill, and New Castle Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">In response, Glynn County has significantly ramped up mosquito control efforts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inspecting and treating breeding sites to target larvae.<\/li>\n<li>Deploying traps to monitor the mosquito population and evaluate the effectiveness of control measures.<\/li>\n<li>Truck-mounted and aerial spraying to reduce adult mosquito numbers. Aerial spraying is scheduled for Monday evening, weather permitting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Dr. Pete Obenauer, a local insect expert, said seeing West Nile virus during the summer months is normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cWe do see West Nile this time of year\u2026 It\u2019s typical. Especially August usually tends to be a peak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">He emphasized that there are no human cases reported in Glynn County at this time \u2014 only mosquito samples testing positive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\"><b>[SIGN UP:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/membercenter.actionnewsjax.com\/newsletters\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have human cases. We have pools of mosquitoes that are positive, so it\u2019s always important to clarify there\u2019s a difference,\u201d Obenauer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 dbPNdY body-paragraph\">Residents are encouraged to protect themselves by wearing long sleeves and using repellent containing DEET (about 30 percent) or picaridin.
