The dust storm was quickly followed by severe thunderstorms that tore through the city, leaving behind downed trees, wind damage and widespread power outages. At<strong> <\/strong>Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, a connector bridge was shredded by 70 mph wind gusts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmerwfz4s00003b6nc57q5oy1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued both dust storm and severe thunderstorm warnings as the system pushed into Maricopa County Monday evening. The weather service warned drivers of dangerously low visibility and urged people to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSPhoenix\/status\/1960117554447343846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pull aside stay alive<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmes13p3r00053b6nklfe7x7i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Arizona Department of Transportation echoed that warning, saying there was significantly reduced visibility on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ArizonaDOT\/status\/1960122485707558952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I-10<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ArizonaDOT\/status\/1960177367286161595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I-17<\/a> due to the dust storm and flooding on roadways, urging drivers to proceed with caution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeryl9lh00003b6nc2xabaxn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the storms swept through, more than 60,000 customers in Arizona were left without power, with the majority of outages concentrated in Maricopa County, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/poweroutage.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PowerOutage.us<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmerw530c0000356n78tbmzwj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For about an hour, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had a ground stop preventing any planes from leaving or landing as a cloud of dust seemed ready to swallow up the facility. The airport was experiencing up to 30 minute delays late Monday night while crews assessed any damage or roof leaks, airport spokesperson Gregory E. A thunderstorm collapsed, and its winds blasted outward, scooping up desert soil and building it into a rolling wall of dust. These walls can climb thousands of feet high and stretch for miles, cutting off the horizon in seconds, similar to a blizzard in winter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmerx3sw9000f3b6nwm227psx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can see a haboob\u2019s wall of dust coming from a distance but by the time it reaches you, it\u2019s too late to seek shelter \u2013 especially if you\u2019re behind the wheel of a vehicle. It\u2019s nearly impossible to see more than a few feet in front of you in the worst of these storms as the dust chokes out light.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmes156o3000c3b6n55hxwvnb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The haboob in Phoenix comes after a weekend dust storm in Nevada blew through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/24\/health\/burning-man-radical-self-expression-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Burning Man<\/a>, an annual arts gathering in Black Rock City, about 120 miles from Reno.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmes3xkui00003b6o7upzdvkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As attendees began arriving at the remote desert location Saturday, strong thunderstorm winds kicked up a dust plume, closing access roads and sending vendors scrambling to secure their tents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmes2eo88000h3b6n0rze224n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe had to take our sign down. So that was pretty wild.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmerxgym4000i3b6nbn6yrjs4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Southwest monsoon pattern isn\u2019t quite done yet and neither is the triple-digit heat. Phoenix picked up just under a quarter inch of rain with these storms Monday, and the area has a continued chance of thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday before the threat eases for the latter half of the week.
