Walker, who has served as executive director of the Fort Worth museum since 2011, will step down Aug. 31, museum officials announced Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been honored to lead the Carter for the past fourteen years and watch it evolve into the impactful institution it is today,\u201d Walker said in a statement. \u201cGiven all that we have accomplished together, it feels like the right moment for me to depart and allow a new leader to take the helm as the Carter plans for its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen Hixon, president of the board of trustees, said in a statement that Walker carried forward the vision of museum founder Ruth Carter Stevenson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrew came to understand her passion and vision and continued to ably lead the Museum through the transition years and beyond,\u201d Hixon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CXR53H-OjGm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carter Stevenson\u2019s daughter<\/a>, said. \u201cWe are grateful for all he has done to set the Carter on such a strong path for its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Wilcox, the museum\u2019s chief operating officer, will serve as interim director while the board searches for a permanent replacement.<\/p>\n<p>During Walker\u2019s tenure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartermuseum.org\/about\/carter-museum-timeline#timeline-section-heading--8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Carter expanded its collections and endowment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kera.org\/artandseek\/amon-carter-museum-gets-a-fresh-new-look-in-fort-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renovated its galleries<\/a> and launched new initiatives to bring art into the Fort Worth community, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kera.org\/artandseek\/amon-carter-museum-gets-a-fresh-new-look-in-fort-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he oversaw a renovation that widened exhibition spaces<\/a> and added a website that allowed its visitors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartermuseum.org\/carter-collection\/artists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to explore the museum\u2019s collection online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Carter expanded its photography vaults and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthbusiness.com\/culture\/amon-carter-museum-establishes-gentling-study-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened the Gentling Study Center<\/a>, which supports research into under-studied American artists.<\/p>\n<p>Walker emphasized local outreach during his leadership, museum officials said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He prioritized access to art for everyone, Wilcox said, creating new paths of engagement with visitors through the community and championing acquisitions by a wide array of American artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis impact will be felt at the Carter for years to come, and also throughout Fort Worth,\u201d Wilcox said in a statement to the Report.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartermuseum.org\/press-release\/carter-museum-announces-establishment-carter-community-artists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the museum launched the Carter Community Artists initiative<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/07\/31\/amon-carter-museum-invites-artists-in-fort-worth-area-to-curate-programs-workshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connects area artists with the public<\/a>. The museum also developed partnerships across North Texas to expand its reach beyond Fort Worth, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibitions under his tenure reflected a push to broaden the story of American art by diversifying the museum\u2019s collection, the statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, he spearheaded a photography initiative that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/arts-culture\/2022-11-17\/learn-more-about-indigenous-photography-from-this-new-exhibit-at-fort-worths-amon-carter-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amplified Indigenous contributions to American art<\/a>, bringing in work from more than 10 Native American photographers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the museum drew attention with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartermuseum.org\/exhibitions\/cowboy-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cowboy<\/a>,\u201d a show that challenged stereotypes of Western culture by featuring works that presented cowboys as Black, Asian American, Native, LGBTQIA+ and women.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/10\/17\/carter-museum-quietly-closes-reopens-cowboy-exhibition-with-mature-content-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked conversation <\/a>in Fort Worth after the Carter suddenly closed it briefly and then reopened it with a \u201cmature content\u201d warning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Museum leaders said at the time they wanted visitors to preview the works in advance after receiving feedback. \u201cCowboy\u201d remained on view through March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Notable exhibitions under Walker<\/p>\n<p>Museum trustees will begin a national search for Walker\u2019s successor in the coming weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Sgroi is an education reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
