His status as the franchise’s cornerstone is solid as can be, and his career will be often and fondly discussed even if he decided to retire tomorrow. Allen isn’t going anywhere Bills Mafia, so step away from the panic switch.

With Allen at the controls, that leaves little room and opportunity for other quarterbacks on the roster. Take Mitch Trubisky, the former second-overall draft pick of the Chicago Bears. The 2025 NFL season marks Trubisky’s second stint as a backup for One Bills Drive — a fact revealed through Bills roster transaction news on Monday, August 25.

Quarterbacks Mike White and Shane Buechele were waived by Buffalo in a move that may come as a bit of a surprise to some. White had perhaps lost a somewhat incomplete and nondescript battle with Trubisky to be QB2 behind Allen in Weeks 1 and 2 of preseason action. However, there was plenty of intrigue about Buechele following his full-game performance in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In Florida, Buechele accounted for almost 300 yards of offense, completing 25-of-30 passes for 278 yards and one touchdown; adding four rushes for 20 yards. He started and played the entire game, both professional first for him. He was clearly in command, but with the caveat that the Buccaneers (like the Bills) were playing deep into their roster depth.

Neither quarterback had a shot at unseating Allen, who didn’t even need to play a preseason snap to keep his job. But the moves may leave some wondering if Trubisky showed enough in limited action to warrant a spot over White or Buechele.

The releases of White and Buechele are a reminder of the cold and calculated business side of football. It’s not always about how someone plays (Buechele did impress last weekend). Instead, who you play with and when is often the biggest future predictor in roster management. White and/or Buechele could very well find their way back with the Bills as members of the team’s practice squad. That is, unless another team claims them off waivers to be part of their 53-man active roster.

The Buffalo Bills have one of the NFL’s best starting quarterbacks in reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.
