Meta<\/a> is reportedly in talks to acquire voice artificial intelligence (AI) platform PlayAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The companies are in advanced talks on a deal in which Meta would acquire PlayAI\u2019s technology and some of its employees, Bloomberg\u00a0reported<\/a> Thursday (June 26), citing unnamed sources.<\/p>\n

The deal has not been finalized, and its provisions could change, according to the report.<\/p>\n

Reached by PYMNTS, Meta declined to comment on the report.<\/p>\n

PlayAI did not immediately respond to PYMNTS\u2019 request for comment.<\/p>\n

An acquisition of PlayAI could help Meta bring more voice features to its AI assistant and its smartglasses, the Bloomberg report said.<\/p>\n

PlayAI said in a November\u00a0blog post<\/a> that it raised $21 million in seed and pre-seed funding to \u201ccraft the voice of intelligence and be the cornerstone of voice-first human-computer interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company said in the post that it had released a text-to-speech model with voice cloning called\u00a0Play 3.0 mini<\/a>, a no-code voice agent platform, real-time application programming interfaces (APIs<\/a>) for conversational voice agents and multi-turn speech model called PlayDialog<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a November\u00a0press release<\/a> announcing the seed round, PlayAI Co-founder and CEO\u00a0Mahmoud Felfel<\/a> said: \u201cSpeech as an interface is exploding in popularity, and we knew\u00a0it\u00a0was a massive opportunity from the get-go. Building voice agents that can converse like humans and autonomously handle complex tasks is no easy feat, and\u00a0I\u2019m immensely proud of what our team has achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was reported Tuesday (June 24) that Meta CEO\u00a0Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> has approached several high-profile\u00a0AI startups<\/a> for potential acquisition.<\/p>\n

While most of the AI startups said no to Zuckerberg, he succeeded with\u00a0Scale AI<\/a>. Meta is investing\u00a0$14.3 billion for a 49% stake and\u00a0hiring away its CEO,\u00a0Alexandr Wang<\/a>, who will lead Meta\u2019s superintelligence efforts.<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg is seeking to beef up its AI efforts after\u00a0reportedly being frustrated by the pace of advancements\u00a0of its flagship open-source large language model, Llama.<\/p>\n

He has also been personally campaigning to hire new\u00a0AI talent<\/a> to bolster the company\u2019s efforts.
