{"id":177483,"date":"2025-08-26T16:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T16:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/177483\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T16:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T16:39:10","slug":"lisa-cook-will-sue-over-trump-firing-from-fed-board-her-lawyer-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/177483\/","title":{"rendered":"Lisa Cook will sue over Trump firing from Fed board, her lawyer says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lisa Cook, governor of the US Federal Reserve, during a Fed Listens event in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, March 22, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> Board Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/trump-fires-lisa-cook-fed-powell.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Cook<\/a> will file a lawsuit challenging her removal by Presiden<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">t Donald Trump<\/a>, her attorney said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,&#8221; the lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement, a day after Trump cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/26\/lisa-cook-fed-firing-trump-lutnick.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allegations of mortgage fraud by Cook<\/a> in firing her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His attempt to fire her, based solely on a referral letter, lacks any factual or legal basis,&#8221; Lowell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be filing a lawsuit challenging this illegal action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC politics coverage<\/p>\n<p>The White House and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to CNBC&#8217;s requests for comment on Lowell&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve&#8217;s media office has not commented on Trump&#8217;s action, nor replied to CNBC&#8217;s question about whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/26\/lisa-cook-fed-work-trump-fire.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cook is working at her office<\/a> on Tuesday or remotely.<\/p>\n<p>If Cook does sue, the case could end up being decided by the Supreme Court. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/aboutthefed\/section10.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal Reserve Act of 1913<\/a> says that a president can fire a member of the Federal Reserve Board only &#8220;for cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That has long been understood to mean malfeasance or dereliction of duty while a board member.\/<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department last week opened a criminal investigation of Cook after she was accused of making false statements on home mortgage applications by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhfa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal Housing Finance Agency<\/a> Bill Pulte.<\/p>\n<p>Pulte pointed to documents that Cook allegedly signed for properties in Michigan and Georgia claiming they were each her primary residence, which he claimed was done &#8220;in order to potentially secure lower interest rates and more favorable loan terms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The documents would have been signed before Cook joined the Fed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump cited those allegations on Monday night in a letter to Cook notifying her of her removal.<\/p>\n<p>Cook responded Monday, saying in a statement, &#8220;President Trump purported to fire me &#8216;for cause&#8217; when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will not resign,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 CNBC&#8217;s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/kevin-breuninger\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kevin Breuninger<\/strong><\/a><strong> contributed to this story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is breaking news.
