Walker, who has served as the museum\u2019s executive director for 14 years, will step down from his post next week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cA particular highlight for me has been our expanded engagement with the communities we serve, and the relationships we have built with our partners and supporters,\u201d Walker said in a news release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">During Walker\u2019s tenure the museum began its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartermuseum.org\/about\/carter-community\/carter-community-artists\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">community artists initiative<\/a>, underwent a major renovation that expanded and improved the museum\u2019s galleries and acquired artwork by several artists, including more than 10 indigenous photographers. <\/p>\n<p>News Roundups<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-cta-social-module__zWZy- mb-4\">Catch up on the day&#8217;s news you need to know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Karen Hixon is the president of the museum\u2019s board and the daughter of Ruth Carter Stevenson, who helped found the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cAndrew came to understand her passion and vision and continued to ably lead the Museum through the transition years and beyond,\u201d Hixon said in a news release. \u201cWe are grateful for all he has done to set the Carter on such a strong path for its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Last fall, the museum also faced criticism for its decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/10\/17\/carter-museum-quietly-closes-reopens-cowboy-exhibition-with-mature-content-warning\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">temporarily close an exhibition without explanation<\/a>. \u201cCowboy\u201d was described by the museum as an exhibition that sought to \u201cdisrupt the homogeneous ideal of the cowboy as a white, cisgender American male.\u201d When the exhibition reopened, it had a \u201cmature content\u201d label. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The museum never explained what works within the show it considered mature or why, but Rafa Esparza, an artist whose painting of two cowboys kissing on the dance floor was in the exhibition, described the decision and lack of communication as a form of \u201ccensorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would it feel like for an artist if someone came in and said, \u2018Hey, I\u2019d love to invite you to see the show, but I have to warn you, you\u2019re going to see a painting of a Black cowboy.\u2019 Like, how does that warrant a mature content disclaimer, right?\u201d Esparza said in a February talk at the museum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cAnd, like, \u2018I want to show you this incredible \u2018Cowboy\u2019 exhibit and at the Amon Carter, but, just warning you, you\u2019re going to see a woman riding a horse.\u2019 \u2026 If you describe all of the works in the show it becomes very absurd.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A search for the museum\u2019s new executive director will begin soon.
