{"id":177704,"date":"2025-08-26T18:32:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T18:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/177704\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T18:32:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T18:32:09","slug":"are-the-flyers-close-to-turning-the-corner-on-their-rebuild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/177704\/","title":{"rendered":"Are The Flyers Close To Turning The Corner On Their Rebuild?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It feels like the Philadelphia Flyers have been in a perpetual rebuild for the last decade, but really, it\u2019s been two separate attempts at a rebuild. This most recent edition <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehockeywriters.com\/flyers-rebuild-poised-for-success\/#:~:text=The%20Flyers%20first%20officially%20started,it%20comes%20to%20the%20rebuild.\" rel=\"noopener\">essentially kicked off in March of 2023<\/a> when prior Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2023\/03\/philadelphia-flyers-fire-chuck-fletcher.html\" rel=\"noopener\">was fired<\/a> and replaced by current GM <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brierda01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daniel Briere<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flyers fans might not have had much to cheer about the past ten years; however, that window of futility is beginning to close, and a new window, one of opportunity, is starting to open. The issue for the Flyers, and this could be one for their cross-state rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, is that they don\u2019t have those high-impact top-end young assets, which will hurt their ability to build around their young pieces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say that the Flyers have failed their rebuild, but their prospect pool isn\u2019t overly impressive for a team that has been in what feels like a forever rebuild and is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6061585\/2025\/01\/22\/flyers-nhl-prospects-rankings-2025\/\" rel=\"noopener\">currently ranked 18th overall by The Athletic\u2019s Scott Wheeler<\/a>, although that was before their 2025 draft haul. Some fans might have concerns about a repeat of the Flyers\u2019 last rebuild that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ron Hextall<\/a><\/strong> oversaw, but Briere appears to be more assertive than Hextall and likely won\u2019t be so passive when it comes to building the team he wants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.prohockeyrumors.com\/files\/2025\/08\/matvei-michkov-flyers.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-240293 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/matvei-michkov-flyers-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"  \/><\/a>Now, in fairness to the Flyers\u2019 prospect ranking, they have graduated a couple of terrific prospects to the NHL already, in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brinkbo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bobby Brink<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/michkma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matvei Michkov<\/a><\/strong>, which lowers their ranking. They also had several players age out of Wheeler\u2019s rankings, making it somewhat premature to say that the pool is devoid of future talent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, if you look down the Flyers\u2019 NHL roster, there isn\u2019t a lot of talent under the age of 25, and the rebuild seems to lack the cohesiveness that some of the better rebuilds and retools have shown. When a team like the Pittsburgh Penguins emerged from the basement of the NHL standings, they did so with two significant waves of talent entering the NHL full-time in back-to-back summers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong> didn\u2019t start his NHL career alone; he was joined by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitnry01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryan Whitney<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/talboma01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maxime Talbot<\/a><\/strong>. The following season, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staaljo01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jordan Staal<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/letankr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kris Letang<\/a><\/strong> arrived, and the Penguins remained in the Stanley Cup picture for the next decade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Flyers don\u2019t seem to have such waves of talent inflows in their rebuild, which is certainly not ideal. That isn\u2019t to say that Philadelphia can\u2019t or won\u2019t go through a rebuild like that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it does seem like the waves of talent are becoming fewer and farther between, which could delay the process and lead to a few more years of struggles for the Flyers before they finally turn the corner. The 2025-26 season could get ugly in Philly, as they still lack solid goaltending and have gaps all over their roster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will, however, be signs of hope this season as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/luchaje01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jett Luchanko<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/590255\/oliver-bonk\" rel=\"noopener\">Oliver Bonk<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/623782\/alex-bump\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Bump<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grebeni01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nikita Grebenkin<\/a><\/strong> will likely all compete for NHL roster spots, which should lead to some exciting competition. Speaking of fun, bringing in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zegratr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trevor Zegras<\/a><\/strong> from the Anaheim Ducks was one of the most entertaining <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/06\/flyers-expected-to-acquire-trevor-zegras-from-ducks.html\" rel=\"noopener\">moves of the summer<\/a> and could make for great theater if Zegras can get close to the form he showed a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries and inconsistency have lowered the 24-year-old\u2019s trade value, and the Flyers managed to acquire him cheaply from the Ducks. If he can return to his 2021-22 level, the Flyers will have the chance to sign Zegras long-term and make him part of their future, or trade him for a better return than what they sent to Anaheim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trade was a smart move for Briere, who was aggressive in acquiring the talented forward. It\u2019s possible that the deal doesn\u2019t work out, but since Philadelphia gave up so little (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/poehlry01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryan Poehling<\/a><\/strong>, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick), it was worth the risk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other significant move the Flyers made this summer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/05\/flyers-expected-to-name-rick-tocchet-head-coach.html\" rel=\"noopener\">was hiring<\/a> former Flyers player and Jack Adams Award winner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tocchri01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rick Tocchet<\/a><\/strong> as Philadelphia\u2019s new bench boss. Tocchet, who has won two Stanley Cups as an assistant, should bring some structure and accountability to the Flyers, which was missing last season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tocchet\u2019s relationship with Zegras will be interesting to watch develop, as he has a history of getting through to talented players who may not be interested in playing two-way hockey. In Pittsburgh, Tocchet was respected as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sullimi01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Sullivan<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s go-between when it came to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesseph01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Phil Kessel<\/a><\/strong>, and those years in Pittsburgh were some of Kessel\u2019s best NHL seasons, with likely some of the credit going to Tocchet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from those two major moves, the Flyers stayed quiet this summer. They made only depth signings with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dvorach01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christian Dvorak<\/a><\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/07\/flyers-to-sign-noah-juulsen.html\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year deal<\/a>), <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vladada01.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Vladar<\/a><\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/07\/flyers-dan-vladar-agree-to-terms-on-two-year-deal.html\" rel=\"noopener\">two-year contract<\/a>), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/juulsno01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Noah Juulsen<\/a><\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/07\/flyers-to-sign-noah-juulsen.html\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year deal<\/a>), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbede01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dennis Gilbert<\/a><\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/2025\/07\/flyers-to-sign-noah-juulsen.html\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year deal<\/a>), and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pederla01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-08-23_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lane Pederson<\/a><\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/players\/lane-pederson\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year deal<\/a>). These signings won\u2019t propel the Flyers into the playoff race, but they will strengthen the team\u2019s depth and give some of the younger prospects more time to develop in the pro ranks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all the changes, this season will probably still be a tough one for the Flyers since they lack enough young players to step up and compete in the Eastern Conference.
