Or at least, that\u2019s the hope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSony Pictures is in talks with Netflix to make an animated sequel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/kpop-demon-hunters\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kpop-demon-hunters_1\" data-tag=\"kpop-demon-hunters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KPop Demon Hunters<\/a>, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The fantasy musical has turned into the sort of cultural sensation every Hollywood studio or streamer tries to hunt down, even at great expense, but rarely finds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe events of the past few days \u2014 including Netflix dropping a surprise sing-along version of the Sony Pictures Animation film in theaters over the Aug. 22-24 weekend, or Demon Hunter becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/kpop-demon-hunters-netflix-no-1-movie-all-time-1236353877\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most-watched <\/a>English-language film of all time on the streamer \u2014 are reigniting the debate as to whether Sony\u2019s film empire gave away the keys to the kingdom in 2021 when handing the movie over to Netflix to release, versus bankrolling a big-budget theatrical title on its own from a first-time feature director (Maggie Kang) with no major stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMore often than not, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_box-office_1\" data-tag=\"box-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">box office<\/a> observers and rival studio execs say Sony made the safe and even the right call, considering that original animation is on a downward spiral at the box office in the post-pandemic era (known animated IP fares better). Even Pixar isn\u2019t immune. This summer, Elio, also an original story, opened to $21 million, the worst debut in the history of the storied animation studio founded by Steve Jobs and later sold to Disney. Elio topped out at $73 million domestically and $152 million globally against a net budget of $150 million before a major marketing spend (ouch).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSome say Sony should have held out and taken the full-blown theatrical route, even if it was a financial risk. \u201cIt was certainly a mistake for Sony to give it up,\u201d says one insider on the exhibitor side. \u201cSounds like this was new IP, they didn\u2019t think it would land and was just bad luck for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut there\u2019s a silver lining: When it comes to profit margins, a studio hopes for a range of 10 percent to 12 percent. In the case of Demon Hunters, Sony could be looking at 20 percent to 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe deal for the first Demon Hunters \u2014 which was part of a larger, multi-title pact struck during the depths of the pandemic in 2021 \u2014 saw Netflix agreeing to cover the film\u2019s entire $100 million budget in addition to paying Sony a fee of $25 million, or 25 percent of the budget and certain other costs. Sony also receives a piece of soundtrack sales, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_music_1\" data-tag=\"music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music<\/a> publishing fees for certain songs. Merchandising rights, however, belong solely to Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Tuesday, Netflix announced that KPop now ranks No. 1 on its <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.netflix.com%2Ftudum%2Ftop10&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cpamela.mcclintock%40thr.com%7Ccd424c0bb648427acfe708dde4cfdbc5%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638918303575443760%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Q5UWcM%2FNI%2B1jDQ7v0%2Fxcc8w%2BwmQvTukAjL%2FZyjACP9c%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">list<\/a> of most-watched English-language films with 236 million total views, ahead of previous crownholder Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. That\u2019s quite a feat for a film such as KPop that\u2019s a two-quadrant movie targeting families and females 25 and younger. (Netflix\u2019s all-time top 10 list is based on views in a title\u2019s first 91 days of release.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd the film\u2019s soundtrack now holds the distinction of being the first to have four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvariety.com%2F2025%2Fmusic%2Fnews%2Fgolden-billboard-hot-100-kpop-demon-hunters-soundtrack-1236497803%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cpamela.mcclintock%40thr.com%7Ccd424c0bb648427acfe708dde4cfdbc5%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638918303575477870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Te0UZU3p6mKrWeQksVfEva8BhCjNgjMHD56jhKqGTdA%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Billboard Hot 100<\/a>, led by Huntrix\u2019s \u201cGolden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSony also gets a portion of the money Netflix is paying Sony\u2019s animation company Imageworks, home of the visually groundbreaking, Oscar-winning Spider-Verse films (like Spider-Verse, an Oscar campaign is being planned for Demon Hunters).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor the deep-pocketed Netflix, the victory of Demon Hunters is sizeable, and underscores the importance of keeping kids and families happy as part of its overall strategy to keep subs satiated, which is Netflix\u2019s top concern. One source says kids are watching Demon Hunters again and again, or six to eight times on average (for some, it\u2019s more).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tInsiders on both sides say the Sony-Netflix partnership has gone smoothly (although of course they would say that). It is true there was a built-in bond: Netflix animation head Hannah Minghella worked for years at Sony, including with now-Sony animation head Kristine Belson. In a recent statement to THR, Netflix head of film Dan Lin went out of his way to give<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/kpop-demon-hunters-success-netflix-directors-interview-1236335810\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a shout out <\/a>to Sony, saying that he and Minghella are \u201cthrilled to be supporting\u201d Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans \u201cand Kristine Belson and her team at Sony Animation\u201d as their studio partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the same exchange with THR, Lin noted that Netflix allows its films to build an audience organically and over time. That\u2019s a luxury theater owners can\u2019t afford to offer if a film has a sluggish start. \u201cAs word of mouth spread and social media caught on, we saw viewing really take off and the movie became a cultural phenomenon \u2014 it\u2019s one of the only films to grow its audiences in its fifth and six weeks of release,\u201d Lin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKang and Appelhans have spoken in the broadest of strokes about a possible sequel, but sources tell THR they haven\u2019t been approached by either Sony Animation or Netflix, contrary to reports suggesting otherwise, since there\u2019s no deal yet between the latter two parties.
