{"id":178796,"date":"2025-08-27T04:20:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T04:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/178796\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T04:20:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T04:20:11","slug":"pennsylvania-advocates-urge-congress-to-preserve-cancer-research-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/178796\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania advocates urge Congress to preserve cancer research funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Cancer survivors, doctors and advocates in Pennsylvania say proposed cuts to federal funding for laboratories and research on cancer treatments and therapies could delay future breakthroughs.\n<\/p>\n<p>Supporters and members of the American Cancer Society\u2019s Cancer Action Network are now calling on Congress to preserve funding in the next fiscal year budget and reject the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/cancer-research-in-jeopardy-zftmnf\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposal<\/a> of slashing $2.7 billion from the National Cancer Institute.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause everybody is at risk of getting cancer,\u201d said William Sherman, the network\u2019s managing director of advocacy for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.\n  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-713913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/08-26-2025-k-paynter-protect-cancer-research-american-cancer-society_-7.jpg\" alt=\"William Sherman smiles at Independence Hall\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1401\"  \/>William Sherman, managing director for government relations at the American Cancer Society, joined other researchers and cancer survivors at Independence Hall to call on U.S. Congress to protect cancer research funding, Aug. 26, 2025. (Kimberly Paynter\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>The cancer institute cuts are part of the administration\u2019s larger proposal to reduce funding for the National Institutes of Health <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama-health-forum\/fullarticle\/2836433\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by about 40%<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania scientists, companies and institutions received more than $2 billion from the NIH in fiscal year 2024, according to the American Cancer Society, including about $319 million from the cancer institute.\n<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to find better and new treatments for cancer has, for the most part, been a universally supported endeavor, Sherman said, a nonpartisan issue.\n<\/p>\n<p>Until now.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never met an elected official who tells me no to my face,\u201d Sherman said, referring to gathering support in Washington, D.C. for research efforts. \u201cBut we know by their voting behaviors that not everybody is with us right now.
