{"id":179106,"date":"2025-08-27T07:08:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T07:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/179106\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T07:08:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T07:08:10","slug":"pocock-greens-and-coalition-united-in-push-to-get-older-australians-more-help-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/179106\/","title":{"rendered":"Pocock, Greens and Coalition united in push to get older Australians more help at home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Coalition, Greens and crossbench are banding together to pressure Labor to boost the number of support packages available to older Australians who want to remain in their home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After the federal government <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-04\/aged-care-reforms-delayed-until-november\/105374798\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105374798\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delayed the implementation of the new Aged Care Act<\/a> from July to November, there have been widespread calls for Labor to make the additional 83,000 packages it has promised available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Those calls came from aged care providers, advocates and politicians who accepted the broader delay was needed to ensure a smooth implementation, but argued <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-11\/at-home-support-calls-after-aged-care-reform-delay\/105403364\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105403364\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extra home care packages should have been released in the interim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-11\/at-home-support-calls-after-aged-care-reform-delay\/105403364\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Push for urgent support packages to age at home<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The government is under pressure to fund at least 20,000 new at-home care packages for older Australians who need additional support, after the implementation of sweeping sector-wide aged care reforms were postponed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest data shows more than 87,000 people are on the waitlist for a home care package, with some waiting as long as a year for their correct supports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Those are older people who have already been assessed and approved for help with needs like cleaning, cooking and showering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The industry is concerned that the waitlist could reach 100,000 before November, when the new act takes effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The government has so far resisted pressure to release more packages in the interim period, but now Independent Senator David Pocock, the Greens and the Coalition are all trying to force the government to make at least 20,000 extra packages available in the coming months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Long waits lead to poorer outcomes<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Senator Pocock said it was a &#8220;solvable&#8221; problem that was resulting in older Australians suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They shouldn&#8217;t have to wait for someone to die before being able to access a package,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve heard horror story after horror story of people waiting months and in some cases years for basic support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bald man wearing a black suit stands outdoors looking serious.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756278490_681_ff184ecc0f5a6b6684b9a027dc517d75\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Senator David Pocock said he had heard &#8220;horror stories&#8221; of people waiting months and years for support.
