(ABC News: Heidi Sheehan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cr Tate&#8217;s first dealings with the site date back to 2005 when the Surfers Paradise Bowls Club was in financial strife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Under a deal to help get the club out of debt, Crestden purchased the clubhouse for $1.4 million and rented it back to bowlers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Two years later the club was still in debt and Crestden bought the bowling greens with support of the club&#8217;s board for $770,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The sale price was a fraction of the $7 million offer the club had received from a Brisbane superannuation fund in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The remaining parcel of land on the site was owned by City of Gold Coast at the time, and has been in Crestden&#8217;s hands since June this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Derelict bowls club \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/b93587aed9e1db736c2a44dbf3f1df62\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The land was previously part of the Surfers Paradise Bowls Club, now wholly owned by Crestden. (ABC Gold Coast: Dominic Cansdale)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A fair deal&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2018 the state&#8217;s Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) investigated Cr Tate <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-03-09\/gold-coast-mayor-tom-tate-at-the-centre-of-corruption-probe\/9529434\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/9529434\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for not fully disclosing his material personal interest in a proposed 56-storey development on the site<\/a> when it went before council in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The following year the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-04-18\/gold-coast-mayor-and-council-cleared-over-corruption-concerns\/11030204\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11030204\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CCC cleared Cr Tate of the related corruption allegations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A 2016 application for the purchase of the lot by Gold Coast&#8217;s council noted the nearby Surfers Plaza Resort had no on-site car park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">All of the resort&#8217;s car spaces were located in the car park under the final parcel of the bowls club&#8217;s land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That parcel of land was purchased from council by Nerang East Pty Ltd for $1.9 million in August 2022, a firm owned by Michael Geoffrey Turner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A year earlier, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au\/files\/sharedassets\/public\/v\/1\/pdfs\/brochures-amp-factsheets\/rti23-24314-valuation-72-remembrance-drive-5-july-2021.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colliers had valued the standalone site at $6.46 million<\/a> in a report purchased by the City of Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Property data showed the land was sold to Crestden on June 6, 2025 and settled a month later.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Land in Gold Coast \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/a978bf6aa158d9e42103b1f49bfad274\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The parcel of land, bought by Crestden in June, is in the heart of Surfers Paradise. (ABC Gold Coast: Dominic Cansdale)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement on Wednesday, Cr Tate said &#8220;that land ceased being council land when the Turners bought it on open market&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;From then on, any private transaction between two private parties has nothing to do with council or anyone else,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At a press conference on Tuesday the mayor said he had let the market decide what the land was worth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I purchased it privately from a private person,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said when the council put the lot out in 2022 for sale anyone could have bought it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The land&#8217;s available for purchase [again, in June] and it was right timing, so I purchased it,&#8221; the mayor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To me it&#8217;s a fair deal so I&#8217;m happy to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Calls for CCC investigation<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Former NSW Court of Appeal judge and chair of the Centre for Public Integrity, Anthony Whealy KC, said the matter should be referred to the CCC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Over a long period of time Mayor Tate&#8217;s company has been able to secure a very valuable property for an amount of money which appears at face value to be very much less than what it&#8217;s actually worth,&#8221; Mr Whealy said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An older man in a suit with glasses, smiles sternly at a table.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/11c32aaeae6869c23f1a8d2239a58ac6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Anthony Whealy wants the latest matter also investigated by the state&#8217;s corruption watchdog. (ABC News: Liam Patrick)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Former City of Gold Coast councillor Eddy Sarroff said the land purchase &#8220;didn&#8217;t pass the pub test&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a serious matter.
