{"id":179885,"date":"2025-08-27T14:07:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T14:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/179885\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T14:07:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T14:07:11","slug":"tariff-jitters-spark-jump-in-usmca-claims-on-mexico-canada-goods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/179885\/","title":{"rendered":"Tariff jitters spark jump in USMCA claims on Mexico, Canada goods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">U.S. businesses are racing to claim United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) exemptions as rising tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods push import costs higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The percentage of goods from Canada classified as USMCA compliant rose to 81% in June, up from 56% in May,\u00a0 according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/research\/sovereigns\/fitch-ratings-updates-us-effective-tariff-rate-monitor-amid-rising-usmca-compliance-15-08-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fitch Ratings;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fitch Ratings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Mexican imports that met USMCA criteria in June increased to 77%, compared to 42% the previous month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Third-party logistics providers report growing inquiries as companies look for ways to navigate higher U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cYes, activity is up. We\u2019re seeing more clients ask about USMCA for U.S.\/Canada\/Mexico flows, especially where most-favored nation (MFN) duties are significant or production has shifted to North America,\u201d Bernie Hart, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexport.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Flexport\u2019s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Flexport\u2019s<\/a> vice president of customs, told FreightWaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Flexport, founded in 2013 by Ryan Petersen and based in San Francisco, provides global logistics solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThat said, most still choose the lowest-friction path: if de minimis is available or MFN rates are already 0%\u20132%, many skip USMCA to avoid administrative burdens like supplier data or rules-of-origin calculations,\u201d Hart added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">In 2024, $406.7 billion in imports from Canada and Mexico entered the U.S. under USMCA preferences, led by automotive goods, oil and gas, and machinery. Meanwhile, $509.7 billion in imports from those countries did not claim USMCA benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Fitch Ratings projects that USMCA-compliant imports will reach 89% for Canada and 83% for Mexico in 2025, above previous estimates of 74% and 63%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Laredo-based customs broker <a href=\"https:\/\/ericher.com\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Richer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Richer<\/a> has also seen a rise in USMCA claims, especially after President Donald Trump expanded the 50% tariff on steel, aluminum, and copper to cover 400 additional product types on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cCompanies are now making sure they\u2019re fully compliant to avoid paying tariffs later,\u201d said Ermilo Richer III, executive director of Richer, which provides customs brokerage, transportation, and warehousing services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The expanded tariffs affect products containing steel, aluminum, and copper, including aluminum cans, household appliances, and vehicle parts. Duties apply to the metal content value; if unknown, the tariff is assessed on the entire product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWith aluminum, copper, and steel now at 50% \u2014 more harmonized tariff (HT) codes are included,\u201d Richer said. \u201cFor example, milk in aluminum cans, beer, and other beverages \u2014 you have to prove the origin.
