With none of Kerkez, Andy Robertson, or Kostas Tsimikas having shown the kind of positional flexibility that might allow them to fill in elsewhere, that seems one left back too many.

Whether it would be Robertson or Tsimikas heading off in search of a first team role at another club has been a story that’s changed throughout the summer, but with less than a week to go before the transfer window slams shut the consensus now is that it will in fact be Tsimikas who departs.

However, it’s clear the Reds aren’t in a strong position, and most of the chatter this past week has been about a potential loan departure, with Olympiacos, Marseille, and Roma the biggest clubs linked with Liverpool’s Greek Scouser. Of the three, Roma seems likely to be Tsimikas’ top option.

Liverpool, though, are still hoping to find a suitable suitor willing to do a permanent transfer deal for Tsimikas, which according to reports out of Italy this week resulted in them rejecting Roma’s approach—which it’s been previously suggested involved a purchase option, not an obligation.

Still, if the chatter is to be believed, this isn’t the end of Roma’s interest. The Serie A side are said to feel confident in their position as Tsimikas’ likely best option, and they believe that if deadline day arrives and a better—and more permanent—alternate isn’t found they will be able to sign him.

Following the arrival of Milos Kerkez over the summer, Liverpool find themselves with three left backs.
