HOUSTON, Texas — Thailand, a male Asian elephant, is one of the Houston Zoo’s oldest residents. This summer, he celebrated a milestone birthday – he turned 60 years old!<\/p>\n
“He’s a very significant part of our herd and has an amazing legacy here at the Houston Zoo,” Elephant keeper Kendra Roetman said.<\/p>\n
Thailand has fathered at least 15 calves. According to the Houston Zoo, he is one of the most prolific breeding male Asian elephants.<\/p>\n
August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the endangered species and highlight conservation efforts.<\/p>\n
