1.\u00a0‘Girls Forward’ program inspires next generation of tennis players<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The City Parks Foundation\u2019s \u201cGirls Forward\u201d initiative is a partnership with Nike designed to help teen girls be active and confident in sports.<\/p>\n

The month-long free program is offered at parks across the five boroughs for athletes of all skill levels in soccer, golf, track and tennis. NY1\u2019s Alyssa Paolicelli spoke with participants at Astoria Park.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0City shelters officially resume accepting pet surrenders after summer crisis<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

After a\u00a0summer of overcrowding, New York City\u2019s animal shelters have officially begun accepting non-emergency pet surrenders again.<\/p>\n

Animal Care Centers of NYC, the city\u2019s only open-admission shelter system, said Tuesday that it has resumed accepting pets surrendered by their owners by appointment.\u00a0In late July, the organization said it had suspended intake at its shelters due to \u201ccritical capacity issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Fired immigration judge: ‘I fear due process is being violated’<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

An immigration judge fired by the Trump administration told NY1’s Eric Feldman she fears the court system is being set up to fail.<\/p>\n

It comes as the union representing the judges said close to 15% of the judges have accepted buyouts, not been renewed or been fired by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Shooting at Minneapolis Catholic school kills 2 children, injures 17 people<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

A shooter opened fire with a rifle through the windows of a Catholic church in Minneapolis and struck children celebrating Mass during the first week of school, killing two and wounding 17 people in an act of violence the police chief called “absolutely incomprehensible.”<\/p>\n

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter \u2014 armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol \u2014 approached the side of the church and shot dozens of rounds through the windows toward the children sitting in the pews during Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School just before 8:30 a.m. Police believe the shooter then killed himself.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Trump extends control over Washington by taking management of Union Station away from Amtrak<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

President Donald Trump’s administration is taking management of Union Station away from Amtrak in the latest example of the federal government exerting its power over the nation’s capital.<\/p>\n
