{"id":180971,"date":"2025-08-27T23:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T23:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/180971\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T23:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T23:37:11","slug":"ny-podiatrist-issued-apology-after-1st-botched-murder-plot-before-prosecutors-said-he-tried-to-get-wife-killed-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/180971\/","title":{"rendered":"NY podiatrist issued apology after 1st botched murder plot &#8212; before prosecutors said he tried to get wife killed again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rockland County podiatrist <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/26\/us-news\/ny-podiatrist-pleads-guilty-in-connection-with-second-attempt-to-have-wife-murdered-da\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who prosecutors said tried to have his wife killed twice<\/a> issued a teary apology following his first botched murder plot \u2013 as court papers laid out the ex-couple\u2019s tumultuous marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ira Bernstein claimed at his 2017 sentencing that he was \u201chumiliated, humbled and frankly embarrassed,\u201d and said he would be a \u201ccompassionate and good-hearted man in the future\u201d as he faced spouse Susan Bernstein in court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Susan, we had a very stressful marriage, but no matter what happened there is no justification for entering into a conspiracy to have you murdered,\u201d he told his wife whom he shares three children with as he got choked up in court, according to video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/videos\/news\/2018\/01\/25\/ira-bernsteinkelly-gribeluk-case\/109799330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">captured by Lohud.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ira Bernstein pleaded guilty to a charge tied to a plot to kill his wife.  Ramapo Police Department<\/p>\n<p>But the foot doc\u2019s past plea for mercy appeared short-lived when he pleaded guilty this week to tampering with evidence in connection to a second murder-for-hire bid, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein was released from prison in 2021 after serving four years behind bars only to try to arrange his wife\u2019s murder around a year later, according to the Rockland County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>During the second plot, Bernstein was recorded asking a landscaper to kill his estranged wife, and then tried to get the file destroyed, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Ira and Susan tied the knot in August 2001, but had a rocky marriage before their relationship fizzled about 15 years later. The two are now divorced.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled no punches on her hubby during the 2017 sentencing, labeling him \u201cevil\u201d and a remorseless deadbeat father who rather lived in luxury as his kids suffered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hasn\u2019t paid a penny of support money to me or the children for almost five months since he pled guilty in January,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Bernstein ripped into her husband in 2017. Oxygen<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are living in a hell, a constant state of crisis, Ira has been living with Kelly in the luxurious Montebello Pines and supporting his high-flying lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said he\u2019s paid for trips to Florida, Broadway shows, steak and lobster dinners and elective eye surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has the money,\u201d she claimed. \u201cBut won\u2019t even pay for my children\u2019s therapist to help them heal from the damage he permanently caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Susan filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of their three children against Ira in 2017 over the failed murder plot, her husband threw his own array of accusations against her, claiming she had mood swings from anger to affection.<\/p>\n<p>Susan filed for divorce twice in the span of a few years, according to legal papers.<\/p>\n<p>She allegedly conjured up false claims of abuse against her and the three children, using the trio as \u201cpawns\u201d when she tried to get him to sign a postnuptial agreement during the first divorce proceeding that ended in February 2016, according to his counterclaim.<\/p>\n<p>Ira Bernstein appeared in court this week. News 12<\/p>\n<p>Susan then gave him a birthday card on April 23, 2016 with a note that stated, \u201cI think this should be a good year. Love you,\u201d but filed to divorce again about two weeks later, along with a restraining order, Ira\u2019s\u00a0counterclaim\u00a0alleged.<\/p>\n<p>The wife denied Ira\u2019s inflammatory accusations, court records show.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear what the status of the civil case is.
