John Lujan (R-San Antonio), who delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-texas-house-senate-results-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Republicans a big win<\/a> in a tough state House district several years ago, has filed a treasurer\u2019s report to run in Texas\u2019 35th Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get an opportunity like this very often,\u201d Lujan told the San Antonio Report on Wednesday night. \u201cI\u2019m big into service, and what a great opportunity to answer the call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The redrawn district is a key piece of President Donald Trump\u2019s plan to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/30\/texas-redistricting-congressional-maps-house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> pick up additional Republican seats<\/a> in Texas in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s currently bright blue, looping together urban territory from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/districts\/us-house\/35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> from Austin to San Antonio<\/a>, and represented by outspoken progressive U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Austin).<\/p>\n<p>But after redistricting, it will cup San Antonio\u2019s South Side, stretching east to include several counties Trump won in 2024. It\u2019s split between white and Latino voters, and about half of the voters live in Bexar County.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/cd-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5413791\"  \/>Credit: Courtesy \/ Texas Majority PAC<\/p>\n<p>Lujan, 63, has been a favorite of Texas GOP leaders who<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/john-lujan-frank-ramirez-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> put big money into his state House races<\/a> as part of their push to prove that Hispanic voters are trending red.<\/p>\n<p>The charismatic former firefighter ran several times before getting to serve in the Legislature, winning special elections and getting knocked out in the general election.<\/p>\n<p>He finally held his state House seat in a November election in 2022, in a district that both Trump and Gov. Greg Abbott lost that same year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always lost John Lujan\u2019s district,\u201d Abbott said at a campaign rally for Lujan in Universal City last year. \u201cSo has [U.S. Sen. Ted] Cruz and [U.S. Sen. John] Cornyn and every other statewide candidate. The only person who can win that race as a Republican is John Lujan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lujan again held the seat in November, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-district-121-and-118-debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despite serious blowback<\/a> for suggesting in an interview that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/government-politics\/2024-09-27\/texas-state-representative-said-he-would-force-women-to-give-birth-after-rape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he\u2019d push his hypothetical daughter<\/a> to have her rapist\u2019s baby.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/BB_08934.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5384937\"  \/>District 118 incumbent Rep. Credit: Brenda Baz\u00e1n \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Lujan said Wednesday that he had been considering running for a state Senate seat earlier this year, but decided it wasn\u2019t the right opportunity, and announced plans to<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-district-118-john-lujan-kristian-carranza-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> seek reelection<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/directory\/districts\/tx-house\/118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Texas House District 118<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when the maps came out, I really studied them, and as I looked into them, [TX35] just took in my whole 118 district,\u201d Lujan said. \u201cI thought, \u2018Man, what a blessing for this to happen like this, where I can have an opportunity to serve at a greater level.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans considering the redrawn district include: Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=871afc94f2&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grant Moody<\/a> (Pct. 3), Councilman <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=012326b078&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Whyte<\/a> (D10) and business owner <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=432e55c459&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Schuchardt<\/a>, who challenged Moody in a GOP primary in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Candidate filing for the March primary opens Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are also in search of a candidate for the race, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kut.org\/politics\/2025-08-25\/austin-tx-congressman-greg-casar-campaign-u-s-house-of-representatives-district-37-lloyd-doggett-redistricting-map?mc_cid=5cf0fa08c9&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casar now plan to run<\/a> for a more Austin-centric district instead.<\/p>\n<p>A super PAC helping Texas Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/texasmajoritypac.com\/redistricting\/?mc_cid=5cf0fa08c9&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">produced an analysis<\/a> of the new district suggesting it was likely out of reach for their party under the new lines, though some local Democratic consultants disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Although it includes more Democrats than Republicans, the Democrats vote at a much lower propensity, leaders of the Texas Majority PAC said.<\/p>\n<p>An opening in HD118 <\/p>\n<p>In gerrymandered Texas, Lujan\u2019s state House district is one of the only districts Republicans and Democrats fight over each year.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Kristian Carranza, who raised big money but lost to Lujan last year, is <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-district-118-john-lujan-kristian-carranza-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">running again in 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Rep.
