It\u2019s going to mean better revenue, but most importantly, a better experience for the traveling public,\u201d U.S. Transportation Sec. Sean Duffy said Wednesday at an event at Washington, D.C.\u2019s Union Station celebrating the launch of the new trains.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screenshot_2025-08-27_at_9_24_14_PM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"hashed-image image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-hundred\" loading=\"lazy\" img-data-caption=\"(Spectrum News NY1)\" img-data-wrap-text=\"true\" img-data-editing=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Spectrum News NY1)<\/p>\n<p>Duffy then joined other federal and Amtrak officials aboard one of the new trains for an inaugural ride north along Amtrak\u2019s heavily trafficked Northeast Corridor. Rail travel advocates and members of the press, including Spectrum News, were also onboard.<\/p>\n<p>Amtrak is touting a host of new features on the upgraded trains, from new signage to improved Wi-Fi \u2014 albeit, the Wi-Fi lapsed and experienced technical issues on Wednesday\u2019s preview trip. There are also new creature comforts, including easily accessible electric outlets, headrests on the seats and an upgraded cafe experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/amtrak_outlets_ny1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"hashed-image image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-hundred\" loading=\"lazy\" img-data-caption=\"(Spectrum News NY1)\" img-data-wrap-text=\"true\" img-data-editing=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Spectrum News NY1)<\/p>\n<p>Amtrak is promising a smoother ride, courtesy of new tilting technology aimed at helping the trains navigate the curves along the Northeast Corridor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 160 mph peak speeds are 10 mph faster than their predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>However, trip times are not expected to improve, at least not at first. That means travel between Washington, D.C. and the Big Apple will still take about 3 hours, while a trip between New York and Boston will run about 3.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Five new train sets are entering service initially, with all 28 expected to be on the rails by 2027 \u2014 all at a total cost of more than $2 billion. The new trains were assembled at the Alstom plant in Hornell, New York.<\/p>\n<p>Years of Delays<\/p>\n<p>The rollout of the NextGen trains is a long time coming.\u00a0The current fleet, which the new trains will replace, premiered nearly a quarter century ago.<\/p>\n<p>The new trains were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/content\/dam\/projects\/dotcom\/english\/public\/documents\/corporate\/for-acela-next-gen-fact-sheet.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supposed to premiere in 2021<\/a>, but faced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/etc\/scaffolding\/news\/extensive%20delays%20as%20Amtrak%20and%20Alstom%20worked%20to%20prove%20the%20trains%20met%20safety%20standards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extensive delays as Amtrak and Alstom worked to prove the trains met safety standards<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amtrakoig.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/OIG-A-2023-013%20%28REDACTED%29_0.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023 report from Amtrak\u2019s inspector general also identified defects<\/a>\u00a0in all the train sets that had, to that point, been assembled. The report detailed windows that shattered \u201cspontaneously,\u201d a water drainage issue that could cause the parts holding the cars together to corrode, and leaks in the hydraulic tiling system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/amtrak_acela_ny1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"hashed-image image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-hundred\" loading=\"lazy\" img-data-caption=\"(Spectrum News NY1)\" img-data-wrap-text=\"true\" img-data-editing=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Spectrum News NY1)<\/p>\n<p>Andy Byford, who has worked for transit authorities in New York and around the globe, including recently overseeing high-speed rail for Amtrak, told Spectrum News that in his experience, launching a new train is never easy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always unforeseen hurdles that you have to overcome,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019ve worked with the [Federal Railroad Administration] to pass all of the tests to prove that these trains are safe to operate, to prove that the new technology works seamlessly and flawlessly and smoothly, and that\u2019s what got us across the line,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Byford is now serving as a special advisor to the Amtrak Board of Directors, tasked with spearheading the redevelopment of Penn Station in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A long way to go\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Even with the rollout of the new trains, the United States overall still lags behind other developed nations in passenger rail service and infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jim Mathews, the president and CEO of the Rail Passengers Association, called this week\u2019s launch \u201ca beginning\u201d but said there is still \u201ca very long way to go.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a start, and it\u2019s good. But one of the points I hope we can make today over and over again is that the process that got us to this moment can\u2019t stop,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That said, future battles over Amtrak funding still loom.
