Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that California Highway Patrol crime suppression teams will be deployed to San Diego and major cities across the state.<\/p>\n<p>The teams will work with local law enforcement agencies as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crime statewide.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom said the deployments are an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/08\/28\/governor-newsom-deploys-new-teams-to-fight-crime-in-major-california-cities-building-on-existing-successful-efforts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expansion of CHP efforts<\/a> that the governor said have led to significant crime reductions in Bakersfield, Oakland and San Bernardino.<\/p>\n<p>The new enforcement efforts will take place in San Diego, as well as Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Central Valley, Sacramento and the Bay Area.<\/p>\n<p>Crime suppression teams \u201cwill saturate high-crime areas, target repeat offenders and seize illicit weapons and narcotics,\u201d the governor\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the state and local communities work together strategically, public safety improves,\u201d Newsom said in a statement. \u201cWhile the Trump administration undermines cities, California is partnering with them \u2013 and delivering real results. With these new deployments, we\u2019re doubling down on these partnerships to build on progress and keep driving crime down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria issued a statement noting that in San Diego, crime has been \u201cgoing down steadily over the past three years,\u201d a result, he said,  of \u201chard work and appropriate resourcing of our local law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, he concluded: \u201cI welcome Governor Newsom\u2019s decision to send more resources to cities like ours to build on our success and crack down on crimes like retail theft and auto theft that hurt our families, small businesses and neighborhoods\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s office said the crime suppression teams will:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify and target high-crime areas through data and intelligence-led policing<\/li>\n<li>Conduct operations designed to deter and disrupt organized crime<\/li>\n<li>Provide increased CHP visibility and presence in communities most impacted by crime<\/li>\n<li>Support local law enforcement by sharing intelligence, coordinating enforcement and assisting with investigations, and<\/li>\n<li>Maintain strict accountability through structured leadership, clear reporting and operational oversight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In cities where the CHP has partnered with local authorities, crime has fallen. Bakersfield\u2019s 2024 crime rates were the lowest since 2021, with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakersfieldcity.us\/?contentId=0c6e2210-64c1-4f00-893b-580c2edf7207\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">57% drop in homicides and 60% fewer shootings.<\/a> By late 2024, Newsom\u2019s office said, Oakland significantly reduced crime, with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/post\/oakland-reports-34-decrease-homicides-after-identifying-people-high-risk-gun-violence\/15730379\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overall 34% decrease<\/a> year-over-year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese crime suppression teams will provide critical support to our local partners by focusing on crime where it happens most,\u201d CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. \u201cBy combining resources, intelligence and personnel, we can better disrupt criminal activity and strengthen the safety and security of communities across California.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"CHP patrols making a stop.
