{"id":183298,"date":"2025-08-28T23:13:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T23:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/183298\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T23:13:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T23:13:10","slug":"dcps-to-consider-creating-new-committee-reviewing-objections-to-books-in-schools-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/183298\/","title":{"rendered":"DCPS to consider creating new committee reviewing objections to books in schools \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/duvalcosb.portal.civicclerk.com\/event\/3084\/files\/agenda\/27216\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>The Duval County School Board wants to create a new committee<\/b><\/a> to review challenges to books on school shelves, but some parents worry it will lead to more book bans around the district and less power for them to share their concerns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">One of those parents is Katie Hathaway, who\u2019s now a mom to her family\u2019s fifth generation of Fletcher High School students. Her past with the school district runs deep, but it\u2019s the future she\u2019s worried about. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re changing the rules and now pushing a policy that allows them to appoint members that potentially align with their own personal beliefs. So that\u2019s a concern to me,\u201d Hathaway said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The policy Hathaway referenced would change who handles complaints made against books on Duval County school shelves by creating a \u201cMaterial Review Committee.\u201d The policy says each school board member would pick one person to serve on the committee, either a parent or community member who lives in the board member\u2019s district. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The policy cuts out the previous requirement for at least one librarian, one teacher, and one parent of a student to serve on the committee. It also does not include language in Florida law that says committees reviewing book challenges in school districts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=1000-1099\/1006\/Sections\/1006.28.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>\u201cmust include parents of students who will have access to such materials.\u201d<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">School board member Melody Bolduc tells Action News Jax the new committee wouldn\u2019t operate outside of state law. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to be, as a board member and as a constitutional officer, doing anything that\u2019s in violation of the law of the state of Florida,\u201d said Bolduc, who represents District seven. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Bolduc tells Action News Jax that, since she was elected by members of the community, whoever she would choose to serve on the community would represent them, rather than herself.
