PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A School District of Philadelphia<\/a> safety officer who survived being shot 11 times is now home after weeks of rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

Staff at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Center City<\/a> honored Officer Craig Romanczuk on Thursday with a “clap out” celebration.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know if I deserve it,” said Romanczuk. “They’re all my friends, my family. Everything’s wonderful.”<\/p>\n

His fellow safety officers and police also saluted his recovery.<\/p>\n

“Today is nothing short of an absolute miracle,” said Craig Johnson, Philadelphia Public Schools Chief of School Safety.<\/p>\n

In June, he was shot while responding to a road rage incident<\/a> near Penn’s Landing.<\/p>\n

Officer Romanczuk, 68, was finishing up a shift nearby around 1:45 a.m. on June 30 when he was flagged down by a person who reported being involved in a road rage incident on I-95.<\/p>\n

“He was returning to our patrol garage after completing an overtime shift on his day off,” said Johnson.<\/p>\n

The road rage victim told Romanczuk that someone in a white Hyundai SUV pulled a gun on them, and that’s when the 68-year-old tried to help.<\/p>\n

“At that point, the officer attempted to either investigate or intervene in some way when the occupant of that Hyundai opened fire on that officer,” said Inspector D.F. Pace.<\/p>\n

The 68-year-old officer managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a tree in front of Dave and Busters along Columbus Boulevard.<\/p>\n

Police say he suffered gunshot wounds to the face and arm.<\/p>\n

“We worried every day that we was gonna lose him,” said Robert Whitfield, school district police sergeant.<\/p>\n

He served nearly three decades as a Philadelphia police<\/a> officer before joining the District’s Office of School Safety almost 20 years ago. His son, Erik Romanczuk, is a Philadelphia police sergeant.<\/p>\n

“Amazing. Really a miracle,” Erik said of his father’s recovery.<\/p>\n

Police have arrested a suspect in the case.<\/p>\n

He has months of rehab and therapy ahead, but he’s already talking about when he might return to work.
