Premiering earlier this year at The Sundance Film Festival, “Love, Brooklyn” is a New York-based romantic drama following three Brooklynites exploring love and loss in their rapidly changing city.<\/p>\n
The film stars Andr\u00e9 Holland, Roy Wood Jr., Nicole Beharie, DeWanda Wise, Cassandra Freeman and more.<\/p>\n
“I think that it’s a very important film. It talks about change and the evolution of people within a space itself that is evolving,” Wood Jr. told On The Red Carpet.<\/p>\n
Freeman added, “All the characters are going through so much change, but instead of it being this heavy thing, it feels like warmth.”<\/p>\n
The stars described how they found community on-screen and off.<\/p>\n
“When you see the movie, just about every location you see in there are like, you know, my friend’s restaurant or my friend’s cafe or somebody’s, you know – let me call my mom and ask, ‘Can we shoot in the living room?’ – and like, everybody said yes!” Holland explained.<\/p>\n
The film itself has the same theme, Wise said. “The only answer going forward, as we’ve come to find, is going to be community. It’s literally going to be being there for each other, knowing each other intimately enough to step into each other’s lives. This film is emblematic for that.”<\/p>\n
Wood Jr., who released his most recent stand-up comedy special, “Lonely Flowers,” earlier this year on Hulu, welcomed a new role in this film.<\/p>\n
“Andr\u00e9 Holland, he just asked me to come be in a movie and be funny, and I said, ‘Well, is it possible to do something a little different than what I’ve normally done?’ He said, ‘That’s what I would rather you do.'”<\/p>\n
“I think it’s going to be a surprise. A pleasant surprise for folks to see him be funny and grounded, right? Like smart and also vulnerable. He’s an extraordinary artist,” said Holland.<\/p>\n
Not only is the film a modern romance, it’s also a love story to the city itself.<\/p>\n
Holland noted, “I think those who aren’t already in love with Brooklyn, I think are gonna fall in love, just like I am.”<\/p>\n
The film is directed by Rachael Holder and is written by Paul Zimmerman.<\/p>\n
“Love, Brooklyn” opens at Angelika Film Center August 29 in New York and in theaters nationwide September 5.<\/p>\n
