{"id":184385,"date":"2025-08-29T11:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184385\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T11:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:02:11","slug":"francisco-alvarez-breaks-pinkie-during-rehab-stint-in-mets-debacle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184385\/","title":{"rendered":"Francisco Alvarez breaks pinkie during rehab stint in Mets debacle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If Francisco Alvarez successfully completes a comeback and returns to the field this season, he would be playing through a torn UCL that needs surgery in his right thumb and a broken pinkie on his left hand.<\/p>\n<p>In his first game of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse intended to test his right hand Wednesday, Alvarez <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/27\/sports\/francisco-alvarez-exits-rehab-game-in-mets-injury-concern\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was drilled in the left hand<\/a> with a pitch that resulted in a \u201csmall fracture,\u201d manager Carlos Mendoza said Thursday, the latest hand injury for a player who has had many.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez was set to meet with doctors Thursday afternoon, but the Mets were encouraged with the early reports that suggested this setback can be brief: They were planning for Alvarez to sit for two or three days as the inflammation subsides before restarting the rehab assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Alvarez broke his pinkie while rehabbing at Triple-A. AP<\/p>\n<p>There is no questioning the heart of Alvarez, but the club wants to be careful about how much Alvarez can handle in his current state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to put him in a position where he\u2019s very uncomfortable,\u201d Mendoza said before <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/28\/sports\/mets-suffer-momentum-crushing-loss-to-marlins-thanks-to-sloppy-seventh-inning\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">losing to the Marlins, 7-4<\/a>, at Citi Field. \u201cAs tough as he is, he\u2019s human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A human who is a catcher, whose left hand takes a daily pounding in receiving a couple hundred pitches from pitchers capable of throwing 100 mph. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Mets will wait to see how Alvarez can adapt to catching with a broken pinkie.<\/p>\n<p>They already were waiting to see how Alvarez could handle hitting and throwing with a compromised right hand. <\/p>\n<p>Alvarez has said he can swing without pain, though that has not been the case with other players who have attempted to play through a torn UCL in their thumb.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Alvarez reacts after sliding into second base during the Mets\u2019 Aug. 17 game. Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>He also needs to tweak how he throws the ball, which he acknowledged is a bit awkward while minimizing the use of the right thumb.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving Wednesday\u2019s game, \u201cBall was coming out fine, good intensity, good carry,\u201d Mendoza said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think he got tested at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/23\/sports\/ryne-stanek-is-running-out-of-time-to-keep-his-mets-roster-spot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggling Ryne Stanek<\/a> entered in the sixth inning of a tie game and walked the first two batters he faced.<\/p>\n<p>But the hard-throwing righty escaped with a double play ball and line out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a good sign there,\u201d Mendoza said of Stanek, who had let up 12 runs in 5 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings before delivering back-to-back scoreless innings.<\/p>\n<p>Without Alvarez, Mendoza turned to Hayden Senger to catch for a second straight game.<\/p>\n<p>Luis Torrens, who typically receives more time, is \u201cfine\u201d after getting hit in the hand with a bat last week, Mendoza said, and Torrens likely will start Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Tylor Megill (right elbow sprain) extended to 70 pitches over four innings in a fourth rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse.<\/p>\n<p>The righty allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, Jose Siri (broken tibia) began a rehab assignment with Low-A St. Lucie on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Less expectedly, Jesse Winker (lower back) did, too.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The DH, who had been behind Siri and had struggled to advance in baseball activities, went 0-for-2 and is expected to receive two or three more at-bats with St. Lucie on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s had some good days, some bad days,\u201d Mendoza said of Winker, who was placed on the IL on July 11 and has a history of back issues. \u201cHe\u2019s giving it a go.
