{"id":184429,"date":"2025-08-29T11:26:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184429\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T11:26:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:26:14","slug":"mid-century-warsaw-apartment-renovated-to-complement-its-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184429\/","title":{"rendered":"Mid-century Warsaw apartment renovated to complement its context"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richly patterned Alpi veneer and honey-coloured oak parquet characterise this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/warsaw\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Warsaw<\/a> apartment interior by emerging Polish designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/dawid-konieczny\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dawid Konieczny<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Warsaw&#8217;s Praga district, the apartment is housed within a 1950s estate originally designed by Polish architects Jerzy Gieysztor and Jerzy Kumelowski.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2241119 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment-mid-century-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Dawid Konieczny-designed apartment in Warsaw\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Dawid Konieczny has renovated a mid-century apartment in Warsaw<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dawidkoniecznyinteriors.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Konieczny<\/a> sought to honour the building&#8217;s post-war character when creating the interior, layering it with &#8220;warmer tones&#8221; and eclectic materials to add a contemporary touch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to draw on the architectural context itself, so that the references to mid-century modern and modernism would be historically grounded in the building&#8217;s fabric,&#8221; he told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2241120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment-mid-century-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Floor-to-ceiling shelving unit in a mid-century Warsaw apartment\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The living space is defined by a bespoke floor-to-ceiling shelving unit<\/p>\n<p>Spread across 55 square metres, the apartment&#8217;s layout was completely reconfigured. Konieczny transformed the former living room into a west-facing bedroom, while an open-plan living area was created from the original kitchen and small bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>The living space is defined by a bespoke floor-to-ceiling shelving unit crafted from swirly California Burr veneer, a material originally designed by Memphis Group founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ettore-sottsass\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ettore Sottsass<\/a> for veneer manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpi.it\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alpi<\/a> in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I chose the wood as the defining texture that sets the tone for the interior,&#8221; explained Konieczny, who crafted the shelving himself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2241121 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment-mid-century-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Timber dining chairs custom-made for the project\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Angular dining chairs were custom-made for the project<\/p>\n<p>The designer restored the space&#8217;s oak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/parquet\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parquet<\/a> flooring by sanding it and colouring the wood with a new stain to &#8220;bring renewed vibrancy&#8221; to the interior.<\/p>\n<p>Konieczny balanced these contemporary updates with mid-century furniture pieces as an ode to the building, including Brazilian architect Sergio Rodrigues&#8217;s slouchy 1959 Sheriff chair.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/08\/10\/warsaw-apartment-mistovia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/praga-apartment-mistovia-warsaw-poland-interiors-sq5-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Apartment in Warsaw by Mistovia\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Eclectic Warsaw apartment interior designed as &#8220;elaborate puzzle&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Angular timber dining chairs were custom-made for the project, informed by the work of modernist French furniture designer Pierre Chapo.<\/p>\n<p>A petite, galley-style kitchen was tucked into the corner of the living space, enlivened by marble olive-hued tiles decorated with an abstract pattern.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2241122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment-mid-century-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_21-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Neutral-hued bedroom in a mid-century apartment in Warsaw\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The bedroom offers a gentle backdrop<\/p>\n<p>The bedroom has a gentle backdrop of sandy hues and features a low-slung Konieczny-designed bed frame and delicate gauzy curtains.<\/p>\n<p>A selection of gridded tiles clad the bathroom, including a blocky crimson-red sink and black and white flooring and walls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tiles complete the design and create a cohesive and balanced narrative throughout,&#8221; said Konieczny.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2241123 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment-mid-century-renovation_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Dawid Konieczny-designed bathroom\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Konieczny chose a selection of gridded tiles for the bathroom<\/p>\n<p>Konieczny founded his eponymous interior design firm in 2021. Last year, the designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/21\/dawid-konieczny-warsaw-apartment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">furnished another Warsaw apartment<\/a> to echo the compact size and sophistication of a hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>The Polish capital includes a slew of other homes by up-and-coming creatives, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/18\/mistovia-apartment-for-food-blogger-rozkoszyny\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a colourful apartment recently designed by Mistovia<\/a> for food blogger Rozkoszyny.
