{"id":184547,"date":"2025-08-29T12:26:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184547\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T12:26:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T12:26:12","slug":"paul-finally-closes-5-setter-as-us-open-match-nears-2-a-m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/184547\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul finally closes 5-setter as US Open match nears 2 a.m."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aug 29, 2025, 02:28 AM ET<\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Paul<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=4115\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nuno Borges<\/a> played well into Friday morning in another post-midnight marathon classic match at the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>Paul eventually came out on top of the 17th-latest finish in tournament history, joining the history books as the second-latest finish in the second round.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Definitely was happy that it was with the win and not a loss,&#8221; Paul said while getting stretched out afterward. &#8220;It was a blast. It was an emotional roller coaster, for sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Paul won the first two sets and had a couple of match point chances to close it out in three. He instead lost the third and fourth sets and was tied in the fifth after going up 3-0.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>The American seeded 14th broke Borges one final time with a back-and-forth final point to finish off a 7-6 (6), 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 7-5 victory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was all twisted around when I hit the last shot,&#8221; Paul said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t even know if he made it or not. I threw my hands up like I won the point, but I wasn&#8217;t actually sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The match that began as the Thursday nightcap at Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted 4 hours, 25 minutes, ending at 1:46 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Paul thanked the remaining fans for helping him push through and wished more of them were closer to the court.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that they should open it up so the people at the top can come down,&#8221; Paul said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know why they don&#8217;t do that. But yeah, it&#8217;s a late one. Definitely my latest match at the Open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Paul set up a match with 23rd-seeded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2865\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Bublik<\/a> in the third round.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s fun,&#8221; Paul said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be ready for the next one. Totally. It&#8217;s what we train for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Paul against Borges, a 28-year-old from Portugal, was the second late-night epic so far this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniil Medvedev<\/a> famously melted down during his match on the opening day of the US Open, a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4 loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2355\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Bonzi<\/a> that ended early Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In other men&#8217;s matches, top-seeded <a data-player-guid=\"431a1bce-57de-2a02-8022-9f32b0f60efb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3623\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jannik Sinner<\/a>, No. 3 seed <a data-player-guid=\"fd06b6ea-593b-d5b3-da2b-767ec3e4232c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2375\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Zverev<\/a> and No. 8 seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/player\/_\/id\/2651\/alex-de-minaur\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex De Minaur<\/a> breezed into the third round with straight-sets victories.
