Now, after more than 40 years of being set against a very recognizable blue, the updated error message will soon be displayed across a black background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The changes to the notorious error screen come as part of broader efforts by Microsoft to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2025\/06\/26\/the-windows-resiliency-initiative-building-resilience-for-a-future-ready-enterprise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve the resiliency<\/a> of the Windows operating system in the wake of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crowdstrike-tech-outage-connected-ecosystem-b7b9c47b28ed65a5fbf050086834de4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last year\u2019s CrowdStrike incident<\/a>, which crashed millions of Windows machines worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cNow it\u2019s easier than ever to navigate unexpected restarts and recover faster,\u201d Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft wrote in a Wednesday announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">As part of that effort, Microsoft says it&#8217;s \u201cstreamlining\u201d what users experience when encountering \u201cunexpected restarts\u201d that cause disruptions. And that means a makeover to the infamous error screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Beyond the now-black background, Windows&#8217; new \u201cscreen of death\u201d has a slightly shorter message. It&#8217;s also no longer accompanied by a frowning face \u2014 and instead shows a percentage completed for the restart process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Microsoft says this \u201csimplified\u201d user interface for unexpected restarts will be available later this summer on all of its Windows 11 (version 24H2) devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">And for PCs that may not restart successfully, Microsoft on Wednesday also said it&#8217;s adding a \u201cquick machine recovery\u201d mechanism.
