Turkey on Friday announced that it has decided to completely sever all commercial and economic ties with Israel and close its airspace to Israeli aircraft, marking a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries amid the ongoing war in Gaza<\/strong><\/a>. The government has also barred Turkish vessels from entering Israeli ports.<\/p>\n

Announcing the decision, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that Israel\u2019s military operations across the Middle East could engulf the entire region in conflict if not halted. He also called for international action against Israel and urged world powers to stop supporting it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have completely cut off our trade with Israel. We do not allow Turkish ships to go to Israeli ports. We do not allow their planes to enter our airspace,\u201d news agency AP quoted Fidan as saying at a special parliamentary debate on Gaza in Ankara.<\/p>\n

Ankara has been a vocal critic of Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly describing its actions as genocide and drawing comparisons between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n

The Turkish foreign minister added, “No country has so far taken a more meaningful step that includes sanctions against Israel”.<\/p>\n

Fidan described Israel’s actions as “committing genocide in Gaza for the past two years, ignoring basic humanitarian values right before the world’s eyes,” according to Turkish media.<\/p>\n

Turkey severed direct trade ties with Israel in May last year, demanding a permanent ceasefire and the immediate entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. In 2023, bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to USD 7 billion.<\/p>\n

Turkish media reported last week that a ban on maritime traffic linked to Israel had been imposed, though no official announcement was made. According to the reports, Israeli vessels were barred from docking at Turkish ports, while Turkish-flagged ships were prohibited from entering Israeli ports.<\/p>\n

In November, Turkish authorities also denied Israeli President Isaac Herzog\u2019s plane access to Turkish airspace en route to an international summit in Azerbaijan. \u201cAs Turkey, we have to take a stance on certain issues,\u201d President Erdogan said when asked about the incident.<\/p>\n

The Erdogan government\u2019s measures come as Israel intensifies its assault on the Palestinian enclave<\/strong><\/a>, calling it a final push to eliminate Hamas militants.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Israel declared Gaza\u2019s largest city a \u201cdangerous combat zone\u201d<\/strong><\/a> and announced the recovery of two hostage remains as its forces launched what it described as the “initial stages” of a planned offensive.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, health officials in Gaza said the Palestinian death toll since October 7, 2023, has risen to 63,025, with 59 more fatalities reported by hospitals in the past 24 hours.<\/p>\n

In recent days, the Israeli military has escalated airstrikes on neighbourhoods on the city\u2019s outskirts while tightening restrictions on food and aid supplies to the besieged region, pushing it to the brink of famine.<\/p>\n
