When Hurricane Katrina<\/a> unleashed its fury in August 2005, the rising waters didn\u2019t just flood New Orleans \u2014 they uprooted lives. <\/p>\n

Families were forced to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs, including Pastor Shannon Verrett.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took us about 17 hours to get here with my family,\u201d Pastor Shannon Verrett recalls.<\/p>\n

A Life Changed Overnight<\/b><\/p>\n

With just two days\u2019 worth of clothes and no clear destination, Verrett packed his family into a car and headed west to Houston.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never forget when the impact hit my daughter. She sketched a picture showing us homeless in our car. I pulled over, walked behind a building, and just burst into tears,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Houston Opens Its Heart<\/b><\/p>\n

As the humanitarian crisis unfolded, Houston responded. The city turned the aging Astrodome <\/a>\u2014 once home to baseball legends \u2014 into a lifeline. It became ground zero for emergency relief efforts. <\/p>\n

Up to 25,000 people were sheltered in the Astrodome. Inside, it became a city within a city \u2014 with food, cots, medical care, showers, and volunteers offering a warm welcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe miracle was we were able to do it in about 14 hours before we took our first person in,\u201d said former Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, who helped lead the massive response.<\/p>\n

More than 5,000 initial volunteers eventually registered 60,000 others to help.<\/p>\n

A Symbol of Support<\/b><\/p>\n

Though Pastor Verrett and his family didn\u2019t sleep in the Dome, they relied on it for urgent services.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ran out of our prescription medication \u2014 we were able to get that,\u201d he said. \u201cThey provided food, gas cards \u2014 all those types of things. It was a great resource. It was humbling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Houston\u2019s Identity on Display<\/b><\/p>\n

For Judge Eckels, the city\u2019s response still resonates:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think more than anything, it showed how much we care,\u201d he said. \u201cThat same sense of community still exists today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pastor Verrett, who now calls Houston home, says Katrina deepened his faith and purpose:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur model at Houston Franklin Avenue Baptist Church is that we\u2019re a church that loves on people,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s our greatest gift.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for the Astrodome?<\/b><\/p>\n

Today, the Astrodome is quiet. But for many Houstonians, its legacy still echoes \u2014 a powerful reminder of compassion, resilience, and unity.<\/p>\n

Still, its future remains uncertain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see the Astrodome standing empty today, what feelings does it stir in you \u2014 pride, frustration, unfinished business?\u201d \u201cProbably more frustration and unfinished business,\u201d said Judge Eckels. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those facilities that should either be redone or torn down. Somebody needs to make a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Legacy That Lives On<\/b><\/p>\n

20 years later, the Astrodome\u2019s role during Katrina is more than just a footnote in history. It\u2019s a symbol of what\u2019s possible when a city steps up \u2014 together.<\/p>\n
