Muhammad, president of Classical California, the entity that operates the nonprofit <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-02-12\/classical-radio-station-kusc-will-merge-signal-with-sister-station-in-san-francisco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KUSC and its sister station, KDFC<\/a> in San Francisco, confirmed the workforce reduction in a note sent Thursday to its listeners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite our best efforts, the fact is that Classical California has experienced a reduction of $1.1 million in support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,\u201d Muhammad wrote. \u201cThis, along with other impacts, requires us to make difficult decisions across KUSC-FM and KDFC-FM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Classical California did not respond to questions on the number of employees cut. A person briefed on the move who was not authorized to comment publicly said it was eight positions, including two department managers, all based in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>None of the announcers at the two stations were included in the cuts. <\/p>\n<p>Classical California is among the many public media outlets that are scrambling to fill the budget gaps caused by the decision by the Trump White House and the Republican Congress to claw back the $1.1 billion in federal money allocated to the Corp. for Public Broadcasting. <\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit entity administered the funds for public radio and TV stations, mostly affiliates of NPR and PBS.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives and libertarians have long called for the end of public funds supporting media organizations, especially ones they view as politically left-leaning. Trump has called NPR and PBS government-funded <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-03-26\/marjorie-taylor-greene-grills-pbs-npr-heads-over-federal-fundiing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cleft-wing propaganda.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The Corp. for Public Broadcasting was also a vital revenue source for cultural and fine arts programming that often struggles to sustain itself in the commercial media marketplace. <\/p>\n<p>Both KUSC and KDFC, which are owned and operated by the University of Southern California, play classical music 24 hours a day and are not NPR affiliates.
