{"id":185427,"date":"2025-08-29T20:03:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T20:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/185427\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T20:03:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T20:03:09","slug":"alcaraz-overcomes-knee-issue-for-third-round-us-open-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/185427\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcaraz overcomes knee issue for third-round US Open win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aug 29, 2025, 03:10 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3782\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> was cruising along in the US Open&#8217;s third round, leading by a set and a break after taking 10 of the first 14 games in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday, when an awkward step while striking a forehand caused an issue with his right knee.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 2-seeded Alcaraz, who won the first of his five Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows in 2022, got broken for the first time in the tournament, then took a medical timeout and had his leg massaged by a trainer. Problem solved: Alcaraz rolled through the rest of the match, never dropping another game, and beat No. 32 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=7833\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luciano Darderi<\/a> 6-2, 6-4, 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first, brief hint of any trouble for Alcaraz, 22, this week &#8212; well, other than the hair-cutting mistake by his brother that led to a shaved head.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/46100841\/us-open-2025-conditions-slow-courts-fast-courts-balls\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/r1538226_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t let teasing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frances Tiafoe<\/a> about that bother him, and Alcaraz didn&#8217;t seem too concerned about what went on with his knee against Darderi, a 23-year-old Italian who was making his debut as a seed at a major.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just felt something that was not working good in the knee, but after five, six points, it was gone,&#8221; Alcaraz said, describing the visit from the trainer as precautionary. &#8220;I&#8217;m going to talk with my team, but I&#8217;m not worried about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other than that blip, his play was terrific in the match, which lasted 1 hour, 44 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>He delivered 31 winners to just 12 unforced errors and won 70 of the 105 points that lasted four shots or fewer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s too bad that I ran into Carlos in the third round, because right now it&#8217;s impossible to play against Jannik [Sinner] or Carlos. They are the two whose level is above everyone else&#8217;s,&#8221; Darderi said. &#8220;Everyone knew going into today that my chances were not the highest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz, who faces <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3511\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur Rinderknech<\/a> in the fourth round, improved his career Grand Slam record to 80-13. Only Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=261\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael Nadal<\/a> were younger &#8212; by a month or two &#8212; when they got their 80th match wins at majors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What else happened at the US Open on Friday?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> The 82nd-ranked Rinderknech reached the fourth round at a Slam for the first time by defeating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2355\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Bonzi<\/a> 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.
