LOUIS — Any lingering worries about Shota Imanaga’s hamstring in his first start off the injured list were quickly answered.

Perhaps the baseball gods just wanted to get that test out of the way Thursday for Imanaga, who immediately experienced the same type of play on which his left hamstring strain occurred May 4. The first St. Louis Cardinals batter he faced, Brandon Donovan, hit a grounder to first baseman Michael Busch, who smoothly tossed the ball to the covering Imanaga to record the out without issue.

“I felt relaxed afterwards, and I think the team felt the same way,” Imanaga said through interpreter Edwin Stanberry. “I was able to stay calm and make the play, so I think there was a sigh of relief after that.”

Navigating seven weeks without Imanaga proved to be one of the Chicago Cubs’ toughest challenges through the first half of the season.

Whether it was the absence of his consistency on the mound or his fun, laid-back persona in the clubhouse, the Cubs survived Imanaga’s IL stint as well as they could have envisioned when he got hurt.

His performance in his return made it difficult to tell how much time had passed since he pitched in a major-league game. Imanaga neutralized the Cardinals, holding them to one hit in five shutout innings during the Cubs’ 3-0 victory at Busch Stadium to split the four-game series and take a three-game lead in the division.

“Today we didn’t really feel like my first start coming back from rehab,” Imanaga said. “It was just, ‘OK, let’s even up this series.’”

Imanaga gave up a one-out single in the first, then retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced, with the only other baserunner reaching on a walk. The lefty was efficient, too, as he settled in. After a 20-pitch first, Imanaga used 57 pitches over the next four innings.

“I think there’s a tendency to get a little overamped in a start like that, and I thought he controlled his effort level really well, his energy really well,” manager Craig Counsell said. “And that caused a lot of really good execution.”

The Cubs expected Imanaga to throw about 85 pitches Thursday, though because of the steamy heat, they planned to communicate between innings to make sure he was feeling good and maintaining his strength.

<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Cubs starting pitcher Shota Imanaga pauses on the mound during the third inning against the Cardinals on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in St. Louis. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

“Our goal with Shota is going to be getting him back to built up, fully stretched out, making sure everything that Shota does is going to be in check,” pitching coach Tommy Hottovy said. “And then once you feel like that’s there, you’re getting a a stopper, a guy who’s done so well for us over the last year and a half. When you need that big start, he’s the guy.”

Imanaga didn’t seem bothered by the conditions or experience much rust as he cruised. Although he didn’t feel in 100% control of his pitches in his first game back, with the help of the defense and catcher Carson Kelly’s game calling, the Cardinals weren’t having much success. He struck out three and generated seven whiffs and seven called strikes.

“A lot of the same stuff we saw earlier in the year, there was nothing that stood out that was any different from what he was doing,” Kelly told the Tribune. “He got in the flow of the game, into his groove. So all in all, a very, very good sign for us.”

Imanaga gives the rotation a needed boost after some shaky starts over the last week in particular. The bullpen continues to be lights out with four more scoreless innings Thursday. The Cubs held the Cardinals (44-38) to three hits or fewer for the first time since June 13, 2021, at Wrigley Field and the first in St. Louis since Sept. 14, 2016.

Emotions flare between Daniel Palencia and Willson Contreras at end of Chicago Cubs victory

Following Matthew Boyd’s six shutout innings in Wednesday’s victory, Imanaga helped the Cubs bounce back as they head to Houston for a three-game weekend series. As valuable as Imanaga’s presence in the rotation is to the team — his 0.98 road ERA makes him the first Cubs pitcher with a sub-1.00 ERA through his first five road starts since Jake Arrieta’s 0.97 in 2016 — his impact doesn’t always show up in the box score.

“Anytime you miss a guy like that, it it feels like part of your team is gone,” Hottovy said. “I think we felt that way with (Justin Steele), too, when he went down.

“It’s because they have such good camaraderie, and they pull for each other. They want each other to do well, but they also know how important each piece is to the success of this team.”

Originally Published: June 26, 2025 at 7:15 PM CDT

ST.
