Ron Wyden of Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>The removals would violate the Office of Refugee Resettlement\u2019s \u201cchild welfare mandate and this country\u2019s long-established obligation to these children,\u201d Wyden told Angie Salazar, acting director of the office within the Department of Health and Human Services that is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-child-migrants-protection-flores-trump-dhs-be793b0c864bd9a7ff593356a6f01f28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsible for migrant children<\/a> who arrive in the U.S. alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnaccompanied children are some of the most vulnerable children entrusted to the government\u2019s care,\u201d the Democratic senator wrote, asking for the deportation plans to be terminated. \u201cIn many cases, these children and their families have had to make the unthinkable choice to face danger and separation in search of safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quoting unidentified whistleblowers, Wyden\u2019s letter said children who do not have a parent or legal guardian as a sponsor or who don\u2019t have an asylum case already underway, \u201cwill be forcibly removed from the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is another step in the Trump administration\u2019s sweeping <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-surge-dc-crime-courts-judges-cases-12bb76d6de84a8c720fafadc77d860a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration enforcement efforts<\/a>, which include <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigration-enforcement-chicago-87ff2bc14a1fcdd4c1a21c74d8fde65f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to surge officers to Chicago<\/a> for an immigration crackdown, ramping up deportations and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-temporary-protected-status-parole-trump-8a1358964032129ba84f10aab071ba68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ending protections<\/a> for people who have had permission to live and work in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The White House and the Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the latest move, which was first reported by CNN. The Guatemalan government declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis move threatens to separate children from their families, lawyers, and support systems, to thrust them back into the very conditions they are seeking refuge from, and to disappear vulnerable children beyond the reach of American law and oversight,\u201d Wyden\u2019s letter says.<\/p>\n<p>Due to their young age and the trauma unaccompanied immigrant children have often experienced getting to the U.S., their treatment is one of the most sensitive issues in immigration. Advocacy groups already have sued to ask courts to halt new Trump administration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-migrant-children-immigration-sponsors-border-7a5004c88260a57ea194631a13e5941e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vetting procedures for unaccompanied children<\/a>, saying the changes are keeping families separated longer and are inhumane.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the head of Guatemala\u2019s immigration service said the government was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guatemala-eeuu-migracion-deportados-menores-edad-1bbde1cfb180253987c71c79e20949e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking to repatriate 341 unaccompanied minors<\/a> who were being held in U.S. facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to bring them back before they reach 18 years old so that they are not taken to an adult detention center,\u201d Guatemala Immigration Institute Director Danilo Rivera said at the time. He said it would be done at Guatemala\u2019s expense and would be a form of voluntary return.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was announced by President Bernardo Ar\u00e9valo, who said then that the government had a moral and legal obligation to advocate for the children. His comments came days after U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guatemala-honduras-noem-asylum-371666b1b5c091276ac27395fc0adac9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Guatemala<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Migrant children traveling without their parents or guardians are handed over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement when they are encountered by officials along the U.S.-Mexico border. Once in the U.S., they often live in government-supervised shelters or with foster care families until they can be released to a sponsor \u2014 usually a family member \u2014 living in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2008 created special protections for children who arrive in the U.S. without a parent or a legal guardian.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They can request asylum<\/a>, juvenile immigration status or visas for victims of sexual exploitation. <\/p>\n<p>The idea of repatriating such a large number of children to their home country raised concerns with activists who work with children navigating the immigration process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are outraged by the Trump administration\u2019s renewed assault on the rights of immigrant children,\u201d said Lindsay Toczylowski, president and CEO of Immigrant Defenders Law Center. \u201cWe are not fooled by their attempt to mask these efforts as mere \u2018repatriations.\u2019 This is yet another calculated attempt to sever what little due process remains in the immigration system.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez reported from McAllen, Texas.
