{"id":18609,"date":"2025-06-27T08:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T08:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18609\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T08:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T08:39:10","slug":"rtl-buys-sky-deutschland-for-175m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18609\/","title":{"rendered":"RTL Buys Sky Deutschland For $175M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/sky\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sky\" data-tag=\"sky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky<\/a> Deutschland has been acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/rtl\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rtl\" data-tag=\"rtl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RTL<\/a>, ending years of speculation on its future and representing RTL\u2019s biggest ever buy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe channel group paid \u20ac150M ($175M) for Sky\u2019s German arm, \u201cwith additional variable consideration linked to future value creation\u201d in terms of RTL\u2019s share price performance, it said. The variable consideration can be triggered by Comcast, Sky\u2019s parent company, at any time within five years after closing, provided that RTL Group\u2019s share price exceeds \u20ac41.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRTL said it expects \u20ac250M of annual synergies within three years after closing. It added that the pro-forma revenue in 2024 of the combined company was \u20ac4.6B, with approximately 45% of the total revenue coming from subscription-based revenue. Subs will number 11.5 million once the deal closes. RTL said the transaction is its biggest since launching in 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/sky-deutschland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sky-deutschland\" data-tag=\"sky-deutschland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky Deutschland<\/a> CEO Barny Mills will continued to lead the Sky Deutschland business until the transaction is completed. Stephan Schmitter will stay in his current role as CEO of RTL Deutschland until closing of the transaction and then lead the combined company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRTL will fully acquire Sky\u2019s businesses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland incorporating Sky\u2019s sports and entertainment. Under a separate trademark license agreement, RTL will have the right to use the Sky brand in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and South Tyrol. RTL will acquire Sky Deutschland\u2019s streaming brand WOW as part of the transaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRumors had abound that Sky Deutschland was on the block since it<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/06\/sky-deutschland-to-cease-scripted-originals-next-year-babylon-berlin-das-boot-1235427038\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> pulled out of scripted originals <\/a>two years back. The German arm used to make the likes of Das Boot and Babylon Berlin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHeadquartered in Luxembourg, RTL owns networks, a streaming service and Normal People indie Fremantle. It is on the verge of selling RTL Nederland to DPG Media for the far higher figure of \u20ac1.1B. RTL has also rumored to be one of the outfits interested in buying the UK\u2019s ITV. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Sky transaction has now been approved by the RTL board and will be subject to regulatory approvals. Sky still runs operations in the UK and Italy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThomas Rabe, CEO of RTL Group, said: \u201cThe combination of RTL and Sky is transformational for RTL Group. It will bring together two of the most powerful entertainment and sports brands in Europe and create a unique video proposition across free TV, pay TV and streaming. Together, RTL and Sky will be in an even stronger position to invest in people, content and technology in Germany and in Europe to compete with the global tech and streaming players. I want to recognise the outstanding work of the Sky Deutschland team, whose strong performance over recent years has laid the foundation for this next phase.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDana Strong, Group CEO at Sky, added: \u201cSky Deutschland has made significant progress over the past three years, delivering strong operational performance and reaching a record number of customers. The business is on track to achieve EBITDA break-even, reflecting the success of our turnaround plan. Combining the strength of our brand with RTL builds on that momentum and opens up even greater opportunities.
