{"id":186275,"date":"2025-08-30T03:30:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T03:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/186275\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T03:30:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T03:30:15","slug":"anti-israel-vandals-target-ritzy-nyc-building-where-new-york-times-executive-editor-joe-kahn-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/186275\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Israel vandals target ritzy NYC building where New York Times executive editor Joe Kahn lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vandals splattered red paint across the entrance of the ritzy Greenwich Village building where New York Times executive editor Joseph Kahn lives early Friday, in the latest attack by anti-Israel activists enraged over the paper\u2019s coverage of the Israel-Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p>Officers were called to<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/03\/17\/theres-an-opening-in-fifth-ave-s-most-celeb-infested-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 43 Fifth Ave.<\/a>, near East 11th Street, just before 5 a.m. on Friday, according to cops. <\/p>\n<p>Residents were confronted with red paint covering the steps, walls, sidewalk and lamps outside the entrance, along with graffiti reading, \u201cJoe Kahn Lies, Gaza Dies\u201d scrawled in black marker on the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>Vandals splattered red paint across the entrance of the ritzy Greenwich Village building where New York Times executive editor Joseph Kahn lives early Friday. kyle mazza\/shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The canopy of 43 Fifth Avenue was streaked in red paint during the overnight anti-Israel attack.  kyle mazza\/shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators said the incident fits into a pattern of anti-Israel demonstrations targeting Kahn personally and accusing the Times of manufacturing consent for \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>In December, protesters stormed the paper\u2019s Midtown headquarters with similar slogans \u2014 smearing red paint at the entrance to the newspaper\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<p>Police were called to the building just before 5 a.m. on Friday. The building at 43 Fifth Ave., a grand Beaux Arts edifice built in 1905, is considered one of Lower Fifth\u2019s architectural jewels, with a limestone fa\u00e7ade, wrought-iron balconies and an ornate marble lobby decorated with Art Nouveau bas reliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The 11-story co-op, converted in 1978, houses just 42 apartments and is known for soaring ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces and old-world grandeur.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Kahn took over as New York Times executive editor last year, succeeding Dean Baquet. X\/@nycscribe<\/p>\n<p>Public records show Kahn\u2019s unit last sold for around $1.6 million in 2009, while larger apartments and penthouses in the building have commanded between $8 million and $17 million in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/streeteasy.com\/building\/43-5-avenue-new_york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Street Easy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building has long been a magnet for the famous and powerful. In 2005, Julia Roberts, Hollywood mega-star known for hit films such as \u201cOcean\u2019s Eleven\u201d and \u201cPretty Woman,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2005\/09\/10\/gimme-shelter-49\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold her penthouse in the co-op.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Marlon Brando, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/05\/entertainment\/billy-zane-is-unrecognizable-as-marlon-brandos-godfather-in-sneak-peek-of-biopic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Academy Award-winning actor<\/a>, once lived there, as did novelist Dawn Powell.<\/p>\n<p>The vandalism comes amid months of intensifying criticism of the Times\u2019 coverage of the Gaza war.<\/p>\n<p>Activists and watchdogs have accused the paper of biased language, downplaying Palestinian deaths, and sanitizing US and Israeli policy.<\/p>\n<p>The co-op building was once home to famed actor Marlon Brando. Bettmann Archive<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Times ran a front-page story on famine in Gaza featuring the case of 18-month-old Mohammed Zakaria al-Mutawaq, portrayed as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/27\/world-news\/viral-images-of-starving-gaza-boy-dont-tell-the-whole-story-because-he-suffers-from-genetic-disorders-critics-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weighing as little as a 3-month-old <\/a>due to starvation.<\/p>\n<p>After backlash from Israeli officials and pro-Israel commentators who said the boy had pre-existing medical conditions, the Times <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/29\/media\/new-york-times-stunningly-rolls-back-claims-about-viral-photo-of-starving-gaza-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appended a correction noting he suffered<\/a> from health problems \u201caffecting his brain and muscle development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The episode sparked fierce debate, with critics accusing the Gray Lady either of spreading \u201cHamas propaganda\u201d or of bowing to political pressure and downplaying famine, even as international bodies formally declared parts of Gaza to be in a state of famine.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Julia Roberts, Hollywood mega-star known for hit films such as \u201cOcean\u2019s Eleven\u201d and \u201cPretty Woman,\u201d sold her penthouse in the co-op.
