{"id":18651,"date":"2025-06-27T09:03:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T09:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18651\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T09:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T09:03:11","slug":"uk-car-and-vehicle-output-falls-to-76-year-low-in-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18651\/","title":{"rendered":"UK car and vehicle output falls to 76-year low in May"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General view of Land Rover cars outside the Jaguar Land Rover factory on April 7, 2025 in Halewood, England.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Martin-roberts | Getty Images News | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>U.K. vehicle production fell sharply for a fifth straight month in May, according to new figures, as headwinds including U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s trade policy hit the automotive industry hard.<\/p>\n<p>Data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/uk-vehicle-production-constraints-continue-in-may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> Friday by the U.K.&#8217;s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that the U.K.&#8217;s new car and commercial vehicle production volumes fell by 32.8% to 49,810 units last month.<\/p>\n<p>It means that, excluding 2020, when factories were shuttered during Covid-19 lockdowns, U.K. vehicle output hit its lowest level since 1949 in May.<\/p>\n<p>Shipments to the European Union and the U.S. \u2014 the U.K.&#8217;s two largest markets \u2014 fell by 22.5% and 55.4%, respectively, last month.<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic slowdown in car production is due in large part to ongoing model changeovers, restructuring and the impact of tariffs, SMMT said.<\/p>\n<p>In early April, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/03\/trumps-25percent-auto-tariffs-are-in-effect-what-investors-need-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">implemented<\/a> a 25% tariff on all cars and car parts imported into the U.S. \u2014 a move that prompted British luxury brands such as Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/06\/trump-tariffs-britains-jaguar-land-rover-suspends-us-shipments.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily pause shipments<\/a> to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>In early May, however, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/08\/uk-set-to-sign-a-trade-deal-with-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> an executive order to reduce the levy paid by U.S.-based firms on British cars to 10% for the first 100,000 cars imported each year.<\/p>\n<p>U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/landmark-economic-deal-with-united-states-saves-thousands-of-jobs-for-british-car-makers-and-steel-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the time that the reduction in car tariffs would save hundreds of millions of pounds a year for Jaguar Land Rover alone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While 2025 has proved to be an incredibly challenging year for UK automotive production, there is the beginnings of some optimism for the future,&#8221; Mike Hawes, chief executive of SMMT, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Confirmed trade deals with crucial markets, especially the U.S. and a more positive relationship with the EU, as well as government strategies on industry and trade that recognise the critical role the sector plays in driving economic growth, should help recovery,&#8221; Hawes said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/ukexchg_widget_logo_02.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"auto\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tGet Ian King&#8217;s insights on U.K. business and the City of London directly<br \/>\nin your inbox.<br \/>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/lander?id=cnbcukexchange-newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Subscribe now<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The automotive sector is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/automotive-intelligence\/driving-global-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognized<\/a> as the engine room of Britain&#8217;s international trade. Last year, for example, the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/nationalaccounts\/balanceofpayments\/articles\/uktradewiththeunitedstates\/2024#:~:text=Exports%20of%20cars%20and%20car%20parts&amp;text=In%202024%2C%20the%20UK%20exported,%2C%20China%20(Figure%202).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exported<\/a> \u00a39 billion ($12.36 billion) worth of cars into the U.S., accounting for more than 27% of total U.K. exports.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, total U.K. vehicle production is down 12.9% from 2024 to 348,226 units, SMMT said.
