{"id":186752,"date":"2025-08-30T07:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T07:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/186752\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T07:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T07:41:11","slug":"melbourne-mother-says-her-medical-insurer-wont-cover-the-treatment-that-could-save-her-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/186752\/","title":{"rendered":"Melbourne mother says her medical insurer won&#8217;t cover the treatment that could save her life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melbourne resident Zohreh Sajjad has been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer but her health insurer, Medibank, is refusing to pay for the treatment that will give her the best chance of surviving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 49-year-old Iranian woman has already undergone chemotherapy and radiation since being diagnosed with lymphoma last year but the disease has continued to progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her only hope is an innovative form of immunotherapy treatment known as CAR T-cell therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It involves taking the patient&#8217;s own immune cells and modifying them so when put back in the patient&#8217;s body they can destroy the cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The treatment is potentially curative but it&#8217;s extremely expensive \u2014 costing upwards of $600,000 \u2014 and Medibank says the fine print on Ms Sajjad&#8217;s policy means it isn&#8217;t covered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Sajjad and her husband Hossein Majlesi may have to sell their family home in Melbourne to afford it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The medical team has clearly expressed that any delay in initiating CAR-T treatment poses a very serious risk to Zohreh&#8217;s health and survival,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Zohreh&#8217;s health and life are at stake, and urgent intervention is critical.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hossein Majlesi stands near Zohreh Sajjad as she rests in a hospital bed.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fe4a6a64fd1e59eddebff9125617ffbc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hossein Majlesi says he may have to sell the family home to afford CAR T-cell treatment for Ms Sajjad. (Supplied: Hossein Majlesi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">CAR T-cell treatment works by encouraging the immune system to attack cancerous cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">T-cells \u2014 a type of white blood cell \u2014 are taken from a patient&#8217;s blood then genetically engineered in a lab to produce molecules called chimeric antigen receptors (CAR).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These receptors allow the cells to target cancer cells but ignore others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Majlesi said his family felt duped by Medibank, with the health insurer hiding behind technicalities to avoid paying for the CAR T-cell treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re being forced to liquidate assets to save my wife&#8217;s life,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2022-02-03\/leukaemia-car-t-cell-therapy-immunotherapy-immune-system-cancer\/100794750\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Living drug&#8217; keeping cancer patients in remission<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">When Doug Olsen&#8217;s blood cancer returned after five years in\u00a0remission, he signed up for an experimental therapy that would use his own immune system against the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In correspondence from Medibank, Ms Sajjad and Mr Majlesi were told CAR T-cell therapy was &#8220;a highly specialised treatment currently available to Medicare eligible recipients&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Sajjad is not able to access Medicare as she is not yet an Australian permanent resident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we enrolled with Medibank, they were fully aware that we were not permanent residents and explicitly included this in our policy,&#8221; Mr Majlesi told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The policy clearly states that all cancer treatments, including immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are covered.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Meanwhile, we face selling our home to afford CAR-T therapy.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Medibank spokeswoman told the ABC they had been &#8220;been in regular contact about the treatment options available&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll continue to support the customer with eligible treatments available through their health cover,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We wish her the very best with her ongoing treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Technicalities preventing access to treatment<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Because Ms Sajjad and Mr Majlesi are not able to access Medicare benefits due to their residency status, they have had to take out a private health insurance policy that essentially covers them in the same way Medicare would for Australian residents and citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Sajjad&#8217;s insurance policy says it covers &#8220;Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy for cancer&#8221; but only medical services &#8220;where a Medicare benefit is payable&#8221; and drugs when they&#8217;re listed on the federal pharmaceutical benefits scheme (PBS).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, CAR T-cell treatment is funded jointly by the state and federal governments through the National Health Reform Agreement, after approval from the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msac.gov.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Medical Services Advisory Committee<\/a>, rather than Medicare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If it was funded through Medicare and the PBS, it would have an &#8220;item number&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-30\/private-health-insurance-is-it-worth-it-tax-time-surcharge\/105121592\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is private health insurance worth it?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As Australians prepare to do their tax returns, some will be considering whether they want to take out private health insurance. So what should you consider?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Medibank also initially refused to pay for Ms Sajjad&#8217;s radiotherapy, an immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab, and another medication epcoritamab, which was designed for people with Ms Sajjad&#8217;s condition and listed on the PBS in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After weeks of back-and-forth trying to get Medibank to cover his wife&#8217;s treatment, Mr Majlesi escalated the case to the Ombudsman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said after that Medibank finally provided a written response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In it, they offered to pay for the pembrolizumab and epcoritamab medication, but still refused to cover the CAR T-cell therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Medibank spokeswoman told the ABC they had supported Ms Sajjad with about $60,000 worth of treatment over a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Majlesi said he had gone public with their story to warn others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Other families could face similar hardships,&#8221; Mr Majlesi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They refuse CAR T-cell therapy, a newer and more effective treatment, simply because it lacks an item number.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Treatment available abroad<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A medical source told the ABC they often advised patients who were unable to access Medicare to head abroad to places like India for medical procedures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The treatment is significantly cheaper than in Australia,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-22\/medical-tourists-head-to-china-and-taiwan-to-save-money\/105655892\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Medical tourists head to China and Taiwan <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Chinese and Taiwanese diaspora community members in Australia explain why they chose to get surgery abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Majlesi said he had looked into the cheaper treatment available overseas but was concerned that the medication and procedures would be inferior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The results of these local treatments are not publicly available, and they are essentially conducting trial and error with patients,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In any case, he said there was not enough time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Given that Zohreh&#8217;s cancer is a very aggressive and highly malignant stage 4 this is a risk we cannot take,&#8221; Mr Majlesi said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We simply cannot put her life at risk for the sake of a cheaper treatment.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The exterior of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/985d64df0a09c39185eb71a31ca38c06\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Melbourne&#8217;s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is one of the places where CAR T-cell therapy is available. (774 ABC Melbourne: Clare Rawlinson)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Not practical&#8217; to list exclusions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a reply to Mr Majlesi asking why Medibank would not pay for CAR T-cell therapy, Medibank replied that it did not advise about which specific treatments were not covered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You also mentioned that there was no specific reference to CAR T therapy being excluded from your policy at the time of purchase,&#8221; Medibank wrote in a letter dated August 12.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It is not practical to list every clinical treatment that is excluded.
