(AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1847:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/10\/30\/mass-producing-the-mccormick-reaper-1848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cyrus McCormick<\/a> moved to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Having invented the reaper that would revolutionize agriculture, McCormick wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1997\/06\/08\/the-man-who-built-a-paper-a-party-and-a-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manufacture it near prospective customers<\/a>, the farmers who were fanning out across the Midwest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"George Halas, center, shows the Chicago Bears new plays, circa Dec. 16, 1933. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1933:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/08\/12\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-25-george-halas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Halas<\/a> returned to coaching the Chicago Bears, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-halas-will-coach-bears\/179957920\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replacing Ralph Jones<\/a>. Jones ran the Bears for three seasons \u2014 posting a 24-10-7 record \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/12\/09\/the-1932-nfl-championship-indoors-at-chicago-stadium-how-one-of-the-strangest-and-most-influential-games-in-bears-history-changed-the-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won a title<\/a> in 1932. He was the father of the T-formation, an innovator credited with being the first coach to position the quarterback under center.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Dsf1UW3tNW\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/10\/26\/vintage-chicago-tribune-10-key-moments-in-george-halas-life-on-the-40th-anniversary-of-his-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: 10 key moments in George Halas\u2019 life on the 40th anniversary of his death<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Halas had stepped away from the team in late 1929, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-per-flash-stockcrash-0814-20110815-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-per-flash-stockcrash-0814-20110815-story.html\">stock market collapse<\/a> saw him resume coaching duties in an effort to save on salary. (Jim Bourdier\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/05\/26\/arlington-international-racecourse-history-of-one-of-the-worlds-most-beautiful-racetracks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arlington Park<\/a> hosted the world\u2019s first million dollar race, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-former-vagabond-looks-li\/179958732\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Arlington Million<\/a>. (Chris Walker\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> Hedge fund billionaire and former Chicago resident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/10\/24\/who-is-ken-griffin-and-how-does-he-spend-all-that-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ken Griffin<\/a> gave $16.5 million to the Field Museum, which paid for the new cast of a titanosaur \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-maximo-the-titanosaur-at\/179961509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nicknamed M\u00e1ximo<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in the central hall and the hall\u2019s makeover. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/05\/15\/vintage-chicago-tribune-sue-t-rex-jurassic-journey-field-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sue the T. rex<\/a> was bumped upstairs.) The gift also established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/sue-t-rex-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Griffin Dinosaur Experience<\/a> at the museum. In 2016, Griffin also gave the Field <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/about\/press\/field-museum-announces-55-million-gift-kenneth-c-griffin-charitable-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$5.5 million<\/a> toward a new traveling dinosaur exhibit and educational efforts.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"tTj0AZkGvx\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/10\/03\/11-big-recent-cultural-gifts-by-ken-griffin-and-others-in-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11 big recent cultural gifts, by Ken Griffin and others in Chicago<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2006\/03\/13\/evolving-planet-prompts-thoughts-of-past-future\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2006\/03\/13\/evolving-planet-prompts-thoughts-of-past-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cEvolving Planet\u201d<\/a> opened in 2006, also thanks to a donation by Griffin.
