Jeanette Espitia and her unborn child were killed<\/a> crossing SE Military Drive near Old Corpus Christi Rd. on August 21. Now a man identified by his family as Noah Patterson is fighting for his life after getting hit on the same street Wednesday, less than a quarter mile away.<\/p>\nPolice say neither Espitia or Patterson used the crosswalk when they were hit.<\/p>\n
“We’ve proactively mentioned problems that have occurred and that are concerned with this not being a walkable community,” said Hot Wells Mission Reach neighborhood association president Brady Alexander.<\/p>\n
The neighborhood sits next to Southeast Military. He said the crosswalks aren’t conveniently placed.<\/p>\n
“It’s 100 degrees. You don’t want to walk an extra 50 yards,” he said. “Either move the crosswalk to Old Corpus Christi and Military, where it should have been put in the first place, in my opinion.”<\/p>\n
Alexander said he and other neighbors have given feedback over the years during public meetings.<\/p>\n
“All our inputs were pretty much ignored,” he said. “But there are so many pedestrian accidents on this side of town. It’s just \u2014 it’s sad, but it’s nearly just become a normal part of life down here.”<\/p>\n
We reached out to District 3 City Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran’s office to ask how they plan to prevent these types of accidents going forward. In a statement, she emphasized the importance of using existing cross walks — especially at night.<\/p>\n
“City programs like ‘Vision Zero San Antonio’ are continually working to make our streets safer for all road users, and we stand with the city in these efforts,” Viagran said.<\/p>\n
“It seems like it’s just every, every couple of days in this area, not just the town, that some serious pedestrian vehicular accidents do happen due to crossings,” Alexander added.<\/p>\n
