{"id":18785,"date":"2025-06-27T10:16:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T10:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18785\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T10:16:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T10:16:26","slug":"caffeine-flips-a-cellular-switch-that-may-slow-aging-scientists-discover-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18785\/","title":{"rendered":"Caffeine Flips a Cellular Switch That May Slow Aging, Scientists Discover : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We know  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-does-caffeine-wake-you-up\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73115\" data-postid=\"165970\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">caffeine<\/a> is good for an alertness boost first thing in the morning or during an afternoon lull, but researchers have also linked the compound to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/giant-study-links-drinking-coffee-with-almost-2-extra-years-of-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy aging<\/a> \u2013 and a new study takes a close look at some of the cellular mechanisms responsible for that link.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and the Francis Crick Institute in the UK used fission yeast as stand-ins for human cells, analyzing how doses of caffeine affected the lifespan of the cells and their ability to withstand damage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These findings help explain why caffeine might be beneficial for health and longevity,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/2025\/science-and-engineering\/se\/caffeine-could-slow-cellular-ageing-new-research-shows-how.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> biochemist John-Patrick Alao, from QMUL.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And they open up exciting possibilities for future research into how we might trigger these effects more directly \u2013 with diet, lifestyle, or new medicines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/acel.12080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Previous research<\/a> found that caffeine could operate a biological switch called TOR (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MTOR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">target of rapamycin<\/a>), which helps regulate the growth of cells in response to food and energy availability.<\/p>\n<p>With the latest experiments, the researchers determined that caffeine doesn&#8217;t interact directly with TOR. Instead, it controls it through the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AMP-activated_protein_kinase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMPK<\/a> pathway, which works kind of like a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1042\/bse0430121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel gauge for cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CaffeineAnalysis.jpg\" alt=\"Cell division chart\" width=\"642\" height=\"451\" class=\"wp-image-165973 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The researchers tracked cell division against certain genetic edits. (Alao et al., Microbial Cell, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>We already know that AMPK takes care of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nrm.2017.95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some vital jobs<\/a> in terms of keeping cells running and helping them resist wear and tear more effectively. Now we also know that caffeine has an effect on it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When your cells are low on energy, AMPK kicks in to help them cope, and our results show that caffeine helps flip that switch,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/2025\/science-and-engineering\/se\/caffeine-could-slow-cellular-ageing-new-research-shows-how.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> geneticist and biologist Charalampos Rallis, from QMUL.<\/p>\n<p>With caffeine operating the TOR lever through the AMPK enzyme, cells are affected in three different ways, the researchers found: in how they grow, in how they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-watch-bacteria-fix-their-broken-dna-in-real-time-to-see-exactly-how-it-s-done\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repair their DNA<\/a>, and in how they respond to stress. That all adds up to cells that stay healthier for longer.<\/p>\n<p>When the researchers interrupted the genetic chain reaction that caffeine triggers, the cells didn&#8217;t get all of the same health benefits \u2013 confirmation of how the compound is working, and perhaps, how we might be able to utilize it in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/diabetes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73018\" data-postid=\"165970\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">diabetes<\/a> drug metformin is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/common-diabetes-drug-linked-to-exceptional-longevity-in-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being looked at<\/a> as a way of keeping us in better shape for a longer period of time, and it too operates through AMPK \u2013 suggesting caffeine-based drugs may have a similar effect.<\/p>\n<p>Any kind of medication or treatment is still a long way off however, not least because these findings are from yeast cells rather than human cells.
