The Rajasthan Assembly secretariat has said that his application has been accepted, and the pension will start soon.

Dhankhar represented Rajathan’s Kishangarh Assembly constituency as a Congress MLA from 1993 to 1998.

He received a legislator’s pension until July 2019, when the benefits stopped after his appointment as governor of West Bengal.

Following his resignation as vice-president on July 21, Dhankhar has now approached the Rajasthan Assembly secretariat for the restoration of his pension.

Officials said the process of restoring his pension has begun, and the benefits will be payable from the date his resignation as vice-president was accepted.

In Rajasthan, a former legislator receives a basic pension of Rs 35,000 per month for a single term. Those above 70 years are entitled to a 20 per cent increase. At 74, Dhankhar qualifies for Rs 42,000 per month under this category.

Dhankhar is eligible for multiple pensions. As a one-term Lok Sabha MP, he is entitled to Rs 45,000 per month.

As a former vice-president, he can draw nearly Rs 2 lakh monthly in addition to official housing, staff, and medical facilities.

However, no pension is available to him for his tenure as governor of West Bengal, though he can claim reimbursement of Rs 25,000 for secretarial assistance.

RESIGNATION AS VICE PRESIDENT

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation as India’s vice president last month continues to draw political speculation. He stepped down on the opening day of the Monsoon session citing health issues, a move described by the Congress as “totally unexpected”.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed there were “far deeper reasons” than health concerns.

He pointed to an unusual sequence of events on July 21, when Dhankhar chaired a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting at 12:30 pm attended by BJP president JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. Another meeting was scheduled for 4:30 pm, but both leaders did not attend.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed doubt, remarking, “He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely fine”.

Speculation has also linked his exit to differences over an Opposition-backed move to remove Justice Yashwant Verma following a cash recovery from the judge’s residence earlier this year.

– Ends

With agency inputs

Published On:

Aug 30, 2025

Tune In

Former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar has applied for a pension as a former member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly,…

[15
64,105250,105249,105253,105252,105251,255,67,132,68
0":"post-187937","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-personal-finance","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-former-vice-president-jagdeep-dhankhar","10":"tag-jagdeep-dhankhar","11":"tag-jagdeep-dhankhar-pension-as-rajasthan-mla","12":"tag-jagdeep-dhankhar-rajasthan-mla","13":"tag-jagdeep-dhankhar-resignation","14":"tag-personal-finance","15":"tag-united-states","16":"tag-unitedstates","17":"tag-us
["GET
