A lot goes into being a big-league manager.<\/p>\n

It entails more than simply filling out the lineup card and making strategic decisions during the game.<\/p>\n

Managing the personalities of the 26 players in the clubhouse is a big part of the job description. It\u2019s a challenge. And it\u2019s something that Rob Thomson prioritizes.<\/p>\n

And right now, one of Thomson\u2019s veteran players isn\u2019t particularly happy with his role.<\/p>\n

Nick Castellanos had been the Phillies\u2019 everyday right fielder since he signed with the club prior to the 2022 season. Castellanos played all 162 games last year.<\/p>\n

But for the last month he\u2019s been part of the team\u2019s outfield rotation. He didn\u2019t play in three of the previous eight games before Friday\u2019s game against the Braves, during which he was removed after the eighth inning for defensive purposes.<\/p>\n

Afterward, Castellanos said it\u2019s been a “big adjustment” not playing every day<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How is he dealing with that adjustment?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best I can,\u201d Castellanos answered.<\/p>\n

Thomson discussed Castellanos\u2019 frustration before Saturday\u2019s game against Atlanta.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick just wants to play,\u201d Thomson said. \u201cThat\u2019s it. I think most guys get frustrated when they don\u2019t play. Because they want to play. And that\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Friday\u2019s win, Thomson mentioned everyone on the team being “all in” on doing whatever it takes to win at this point of the season. \u201cCheck your ego at the door and let\u2019s go,\u201d Thomson said.<\/p>\n

Thomson was asked Saturday if that is something Castellanos is capable of doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Thomson said. \u201cWe don\u2019t need to make a big deal out of this. He\u2019s frustrated because he wants to play and that\u2019s it. I understand that. I wouldn\u2019t respect a guy if he wanted to come out of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friday night was the first time Castellanos was removed from a game for defensive purposes since June 16 in Miami. He wasn\u2019t happy with Thomson\u2019s decision that night and made what the manager described as an “inappropriate” comment<\/a>. Castellanos was benched for the following game.<\/p>\n

Castellanos mentioned that it was first base and outfield coach Paco Figueroa \u2014 not Thomson \u2014 who told him that he was coming out of Friday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Thomson was asked why he didn\u2019t deliver the news to Castellanos himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause he was on base (when the bottom of the eighth inning ended),\u201d Thomson said. “I wasn\u2019t going to run out there (on the field). I couldn\u2019t tell him before he went to the plate. If he hits a home run, I probably don\u2019t take him out of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

But with the Phillies leading by just one run entering the ninth inning, Thomson decided to put his three best defensive outfielders on the field.<\/p>\n

Castellanos \u2014 who is hitting .197 with a .554 OPS in 33 games since the All-Star break \u2014 was in the Phillies’ lineup Saturday against Atlanta left-hander Chris Sale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A lot goes into being a big-league manager.
