Playing to a very enthusiastic crowd, the monster movie was greeted by a 15-minute ovation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDel Toro has charmed the Lido before, winning the festival\u2019s top prize, the Golden Lion, with 2017\u2019s The Shape of Water, which ultimately went on to scoop four Oscars, including Best Picture and Director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFrankenstein, adapted by Del Toro from the 1818 literary classic by Mary Shelley, is playing here in competition; Netflix will release in November. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn the film, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/oscar-isaac\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscar-isaac\" data-tag=\"oscar-isaac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar Isaac<\/a> stars as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature (<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/jacob-elordi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jacob-elordi\" data-tag=\"jacob-elordi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Elordi<\/a>) to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDuring a press conference here earlier today, Del Toro <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/guillermo-del-toro-frankenstein-netflix-theatrical-1236501951\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> of his inspiration for making the movie: \u201cIt was a religion for me. Since I was a kid \u2014 I was raised very Catholic \u2014 I never quite understood the saints. And then when I saw Boris Karloff on the screen, I understood what a saint or a messiah looked like. So I\u2019ve been following the creature since I was a kid, and I always waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions, both creatively in terms of achieving the scope that it needed for me to make it different, to make it at a scale that you could reconstruct the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFrankenstein also stars Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery,\u00a0Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDel Toro produced alongside longtime collaborator J.
