This can help determine if an individual is at a risk of developing life-threatening complications later in life and hence suggest the appropriate line of treatment.

The team of doctors led by Dr Rajeev Bedi, Director, Department of Medical Oncology; and Dr Ravneet Kaur, Associate Consultant, Department of Medical Genetics, will undertake research techniques to help improve cancer detection using an individual’s genetic information. With this, doctors can provide tailored treatment for patients suffering from the disease.

Speaking on the launch Dr Ravneet Kaur, said, “Genomic testing in cancer usually starts with either a blood, saliva, or tumor tissue sample. In patients already diagnosed with cancer, advanced methods like next-generation sequencing or liquid biopsy helps study the genes inside a tumour. This helps identify the “faulty wiring” or mutations driving cancer, so treatments can be tailored to block those specific changes, thereby making therapy more effective and reducing unnecessary side effects. The same technology is also used to look at the genes people are born with. If a hereditary change, such as in BRCA1/2 or other cancer-related genes is found, it implies that patients and at times their family members, could carry a higher life-time risk of certain form of cancers. Early detection allows doctors to recommend preventive checks, lifestyle changes, or timely interventions, ensuring cancer care is not just personalized but also proactive.”

Further adding to the importance of genetic testing,Dr Rajeev Bedi, said,“Cancer therapy is moving from one-size-fits-all to tailor-made solutions, thanks to genomics.” No two cancers are the same—and now, neither is their treatment. Genomics is turning cancer therapy from standard protocols into personalized solutions. Through molecular profiling and next-generation sequencing, we can now detect the genetic mutations that drive each tumor. This guides the use of targeted therapies and immunotherapy, improving outcomes while reducing unnecessary side effects.”

To provide world-class medical technology in cancer care, Fortis Hospital Mohali has launched the Institute of Genomic Medicine to aid improve diagnosis…

[26
32937,105287,815,159,67,132,68
0":"post-188060","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-genetics","8":"tag-cancer-care","9":"tag-fortis-mohali","10":"tag-genetics","11":"tag-science","12":"tag-united-states","13":"tag-unitedstates","14":"tag-us
["GET
