{"id":18819,"date":"2025-06-27T10:33:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T10:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18819\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T10:33:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T10:33:17","slug":"2-men-convicted-in-quintana-road-migrant-smuggling-tragedy-will-be-sentenced-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/18819\/","title":{"rendered":"2 men convicted in Quintana Road migrant smuggling tragedy will be sentenced Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 A federal judge on Friday is expected to sentence two men found guilty by a jury earlier this year of taking part in the 2022 migrant smuggling tragedy along <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Quintana_Road\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/topic\/Quintana_Road\/\">Quintana Road<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Armando Gonzales-Ortega, the alleged coordinator, and Felipe Orduna-Torres, a leader and organizer in the incident, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/18\/jurors-begin-deliberations-for-trial-in-san-antonio-migrant-smuggling-tragedy-that-killed-53\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/18\/jurors-begin-deliberations-for-trial-in-san-antonio-migrant-smuggling-tragedy-that-killed-53\/\">found guilty on the same three charges:<\/a> conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death, causing serious bodily injury and placing lives in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A trial for the two men took place in March for their involvement in the deadliest case of human trafficking in U.S. history. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Authorities found 67 migrants on June 27, 2022, inside a sweltering semitruck on Quintana Road on the Southwest Side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Initially, the death toll was 48, but it rose to 53 by June 29, with victims who succumbed to heat-related injuries. One of the 53 victims killed was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The migrants traveled from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Mexico\u2019s National Immigration Institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Friday also marks the third anniversary of the tragedy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia will decide the punishment for the two men. They face up to life in prison. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A Friday morning news conference is expected after Garcia hands out both men\u2019s sentences. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>KSAT will livestream the news conference in this article and on KSAT Plus.
