(Supplied: Apple App Store)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The app was founded in 2023 but climbed the charts recently, reaching the number one spot in the US in July this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time of writing, it is the second-most-popular app in the US (behind only ChatGPT) but has not been rolled out in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It attracted more than a million downloads within a week, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateoflahertyuk\/2025\/07\/24\/what-is-tea-the-viral-women-only-app-with-1-million-downloads\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Forbes<\/a>. (Supplied: Apple App Store)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">TeaOnHer is effectively a gender flip of the original app and enables men to anonymously share photos and ratings about women they have dated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It appears the motives for the women&#8217;s app were far more altruistic as they were created with the purpose to help each other, whereas men&#8217;s appear more retaliatory,&#8221; says Dr March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There are cases in these groups where men have experienced being the target of false claims and experience slander or defamation,&#8221; she adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In these private groups, men of false claims don&#8217;t have any real way to defend themselves \u2026 for many, retaliation when they are feeling hurt and angry seems a legitimate option.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reputational anxiety in a culture of surveillance<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">What once was private gossip within trusted friend groups has now been scaled and monetised through technology, and the impact is felt deeply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Apps like Tea make many young men feel a sense of constant scrutiny and reputational anxiety, said Dr Zac Seidler.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Many guys are feeling like they&#8217;re constantly on the verge of cancellation and the no due process.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Online masculinity influencers are spreading this idea that &#8220;the world is out to get you,&#8221; says Dr Seidler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Apps like Tea are capitalising on that discontent, &#8220;giving them fuel to feel like they&#8217;re being othered&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An illustration of a teacup steaming on a phone with the word tea underneath\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/a42e348fb57a266119f197fade1965a7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tea is US-based and reportedly has millions of users sharing and reading accounts of people they have dated.
