Kennedy Jr. (Image: AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A late summer surge of Covid-19 is spreading across the US from a cluster of South Central states, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/health\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">latest data shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The spike is highest across a region covering <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/all-about\/arkansas\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arkansas,<\/a> New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/all-about\/texas\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tracking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 15% of COVID tests in this clutch of states <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/politics\/cdc-officials-resign-after-accusing-1357384\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">turning up positive.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The figures almost certainly don&#8217;t reflect the true surge in cases. Experts say the real numbers are underreported as more people ignore symptoms or take at-home kits instead of lab tests. This comes as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/us-news\/rfk-covid-vaccine-ban-trump-1354819\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RFK Jr. is planning a Covid vaccine &#8216;ban in months&#8217; despite the risks attached.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The entire Western half of the country is seeing a spike in cases. Testing sewage and wastewater is often a good indicator of how many people are sick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Wastewater data shows five states with &#8216;very high&#8217; virus activity levels. These are Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas and Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The CDC says: &#8220;Wastewater monitoring can detect viruses spreading from one person to another within a community earlier than clinical testing and before people who are sick go to their doctor or hospital. It can also detect infections without symptoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">If you can&#8217;t see the map below, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/us-news\/covid-map-rise-usa-states-1360934\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">click here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_Screenshot-2025-08-30-102623_result.png\" alt=\"The latest positive cases of COVID-19 in the US\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The latest positive cases of COVID-19 in the US(Image: CDC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is not unusual to see Covid active during the summer, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/nexstar_media_wire\/5473466-covid-is-spiking-again-especially-in-these-states\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Hill.<\/a> Every year since the pandemic the warmer months have seen a similar pattern<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Epidemiologists say the chances of the virus spreading are increased when people spend time in air-conditioned spaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There is more interaction among the population too as people tend to travel more in the summer and increase chances of exposure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dr Ziyad Al-Aly a senior epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis, told the New York Times, that immunity could be fading for those given a Covid-19 shot last fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Food and Drug Administration this week approved updated Moderna, Pfizer and Novavax vaccines for seniors, but narrowed access for younger adults and children without high-risk conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Earlier this week the Director of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/health\/pediatricians-new-covid-shot-recommendations-1338912\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <\/a>was <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themirror.com\/news\/politics\/fired-cdc-director-slams-trump-1356156\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ousted from her position <\/a>after less than a month on the job, with three top officials following behind, signaling a mass exodus from the agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"More than a dozen states are reporting positive cases on the rise.
