A teenage girl has been taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after being bitten by a snake in Queensland.<\/p>\n
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson (QAS) said paramedics were called Sir Leslie Thiess Drive ferry terminal in Townsville about 8.30am on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They said the teenager had been bitten on the ankle and was taken to Townsville University Hospital in a life-threatening condition.<\/p>\n
The hospital said the girl was in a stable condition on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
QAS data shows there have been more than 770 reported snake bites so far this year across the state.<\/p>\n
There have been 83 reported snake bites in Townsville, the most in regional Queensland.<\/p>\n
Last day of winter<\/p>\n
Magnetic Island snake handler Rod Thorne said he expected call-outs to increase as warmer weather set in.<\/p>\n
“Snakes are still certainly moving about and during summer you’re going to see more of them,” he said.<\/p>\n
“In the last two to three weeks I’ve had about four call-outs, this could be anything from death adders, pythons and tree snakes.”<\/p>\n

Mr Thorne said it was important to be prepared for snake sightings and not attempt to relocate them.<\/p>\n
“Wear proper clothing and if you’re out in the garden have your phone on you,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Just leave them be and a snake catcher will remove them, particularly if there are small kids or pets about.”<\/p>\n
A QAS spokesperson said anyone who suspected they had been bitten by a snake should ring triple-0 immediately.<\/p>\n
