{"id":189698,"date":"2025-08-31T17:02:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T17:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/189698\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T17:02:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T17:02:17","slug":"experts-upbeat-about-u-s-mexico-trade-at-san-antonio-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/189698\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts upbeat about U.S.-Mexico trade at San Antonio summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While negotiations over tariffs and security <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/trade-tariffs-and-turmoil-in-texas-local-officials-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">along the U.S.-Mexico border<\/a> are causing <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-postal-shipments-tariffs-us-trump-614fddca6d775961b2b9b0a9d96b6d3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uncertainty<\/a>, economic experts in the region still see plenty of growth in business and trade.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nadbank.org\/news\/events\/summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North American Development Bank (NADBank)<\/a> hosted its annual summit in San Antonio through Friday,<strong> <\/strong>drawing government and business officials from both sides of the border to discuss infrastructure, sustainability, water and trade.<\/p>\n<p>NADBank was started jointly by the United States and Mexican governments after the North American Free Trade Agreement<strong> <\/strong>(NAFTA) was first signed in San Antonio more than 30 years ago. It funds infrastructure projects along the border in both countries<strong> <\/strong>through loans and grants.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Trump Administration\u2019s maneuvering on trade and tariffs, the experts in attendance said they see too much opportunity to make<strong> <\/strong>money in cross-border trade for it to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe long-term logic and value is going to prevail,\u201d NADBank\u2019s Managing Director John Beckham<strong> <\/strong>said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/NorthAmericanDevelopmentBank_NADBank_GinaOrtizJones_JohnBeckham_08.28.2025_AmberEsparza.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5414244\"  \/>San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones poses for a photo with NADBank Managing Director John Beckham. Credit: Amber Esparza \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones said as much when she spoke at the event Thursday, making a veiled reference to the national political climate in the U.S. while highlighting the importance of infrastructure and international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to get political,\u201d she said to the event\u2019s attendees<strong>, <\/strong>\u201c[but] I\u2019m<strong> <\/strong>thankful for the infrastructure that we are building, literally and figuratively through your work, to ensure that once we get on the other side of this, we are in fact able to rebound quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening a trade pipeline<\/p>\n<p>Trade with Mexico is important for San Antonio, said Sarah Carabias Rush, CEO of Greater:SATX, a local organization that works to bring jobs and businesses to San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur regional economy is powered by our ties with Mexico. The flow of goods through I-35 and Port Laredo supports thousands of jobs,\u201d she wrote in an email this week. <\/p>\n<p>Carabias Rush did not attend NADBank\u2019s summit, but said these kinds of events are important for maintaining regional collaboration and trade.<\/p>\n<p>Trade routes that pass through San Antonio support jobs in warehouses, transportation and customs, Carabias Rush said, but San Antonio is also an advanced manufacturing hub.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/NorthAmericanDevelopmentBank_NADBank_SummitConferenceAttendees_08.28.2025_AmberEsparza.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5414247\"  \/>Attendees listen and take notes during a Thursday panel session. Credit: Amber Esparza \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur region plays a central role in the Texas-Mexico Automotive Supercluster, which connects advanced manufacturing hubs from Dallas to San Luis Potos\u00ed,\u201d she said. \u201cThis includes the production of automotive parts, aerospace components, and electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emmanuel Loo is the Secretary of the Treasury for Nuevo L\u00e9on, one of Mexico\u2019s northern states. Population and business is growing in Monterrey, Nuevo L\u00e9on\u2019s capital and one of the largest metropolitan in North America, which is also one of the manufacturing and trade hubs linked to San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, Loo said Mexican suppliers are trying to integrate with manufacturers with operations in the U.S., including Toyota and the soon-to-be-opened JCB factory in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>To expand international trade, Loo said, there need to be more roads, more rail lines and more cross-border collaboration. Loo spoke more freely about international relations between the U.S. and Mexico than some of his U.S. counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe political rhetoric is one thing, but the actual economic world is another,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that tariffs on other countries present an opportunity for Mexican suppliers to fill gaps that develop as products from other regions, like Asia, grow more expensive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/NorthAmericanDevelopmentBank_NADBank_JuanBaez_08.28.2025_AmberEsparza.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5414245\"  \/>Bali Express Services CEO Juan Baez introduces himself to the audience during a panel session.
