JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) has temporarily closed its doors as it prepares for a massive transformation and relocation project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The museum, which has inspired generations of Jacksonville residents, will remain closed until 2028 when it reopens in a dramatically expanded facility on the Northbank.<\/p>\n

MOSH\u2019s history spans more than eight decades, beginning as the Jacksonville Children\u2019s Museum in 1941. The institution evolved over time, becoming the Museum of Arts & Sciences in 1977 before adopting its current name in 1988.<\/p>\n

For Jacksonville native Lee Gibson, who grew up visiting the museum, the MOSH was an amazing experience. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always loved science growing up,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cIt helps instill wonder and desire and just kind of the fun of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Gibson\u2019s wife, Katie, the museum played a special role in her introduction to Jacksonville. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he was introducing me to Jax, we came and went to MOSH, and I just remember it being really, really awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new MOSH facility, set to break ground in 2026 on the Northbank, promises a significant upgrade: Over 7 acres with 105,000 square feet planned for new immersive experiences and exhibits.<\/p>\n

MOSH raised more than $95 million through public and private support.<\/p>\n

The project has garnered strong community backing, including support from Mayor Donna Deegan and the city council.<\/p>\n

While the physical building is closed, MOSH officials emphasize that the institution will maintain its community presence through various events and partnerships during the transition period.<\/p>\n

For families like the Gibsons, the wait will be worth it. \u201cIt\u2019ll be another 3 years before he gets to go to the new one.\u201d<\/p>\n
